AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving program celebrated its 2022-23 graduating seniors while picking up a pair of wins, defeating Baldwin Wallace (251-37) and Mount Union (251-48) at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Friday.

Before the meet, Akron honored its 2022-23 graduating senior class as Olivia DeRodesAndrea FischerAndrea GalisteoRachel SchiffliAlyssa RikerPaige Kalik and Gail Workman competed for the final time at the ONAT.

The Zips won all 16 women’s events and opened the meet by sweeping the top four spots of the 200 medley relay. Fischer (28.48) and Schiffli (23.53) were joined by Madelyn Gatrall (25.94) and Abby Daniel (24.29) with a winning 1:42.24 time. Workman followed with a gold medal performance in the 1000 freestyle with a 10:27.78, while Elle Couture (10:36.81) and Hannah Trainer (10:53.05) finished second and third, respectively.

Weronika Gorecka posted the Zips’ third win in the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.16 time as Workman (1:56.37) and Galisteo (1:57.17) rounded out the top three finishers. In the fourth women’s event, Rebecca Reid (56.39) and Julia Mauter (57.16) touched first and second in the 100 backstroke, while Madeline Dyer (1:04.55), Sara Bozso (1:06.36), Giovanna Cappabianca (1:06.91) and Dinica Bosman (1:10.11) claimed first through fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

The 100 butterfly also saw four Zips on the winner’s podium with Rachel Sabotin (2:05.30) claiming the top spot followed by Fischer (2:07.63), Trainer (2:07.89) and Kendall Craig (2:09.13). Akron followed suit in the 50 freestyle with Daniel (23.83) taking the gold and Schiffli (23.91), Gatrall (24.43) and Callie Parkes (25.07) touching in succession.

Kalik paced the Zips divers, winning the 1-meter and 3-meter events. She posted a 297.15 score in the 1-meter and a 316.60 on the 3-meter board. Bela Noble earned silver in the 3-meter (271.85) and bronze in the 1-meter (250.25), while Laurel Smith finished the opposite, silver (1M-263.95) and bronze (3M-177.80).

The Zips dominant performances continued as Daniel (52.37), Mauter (52.93) and Parkes (55.48) won the 100 freestyle, Gorecka (2:00.24), Gatrall (2:03.55), Reid (2:05.93) and Astrid Halvorsen (2:06.31) won the 200 backstroke and Fischer (2:18.19), Dyer (2:18.22), Cappabianca (2:21.06) and Bozso (2:24.06) won the 200 breaststroke.

The 500 freestyle showcased Halvorsen (5:05.07), Workman (5:06.81) and Galisteo (5:13.15 as the winners, while Sabotin (57.03), Schiffli (57.30), and Trainer (57.31) claimed the 100 butterfly.

Akron wrapped-up the meet by claiming the top four spots in the 200 individual medley and 400 freestyle relay events as Sabotin (2:07.76) won the 200 IM and the team of Schiffli (53.80), Gatrall (52.41), Gorecka (52.22) and Daniel (52.60) flew to a 3:31.03 time.

Akron will be back in action at the Shamrock Invite on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28.

AKRON, Ohio – Mount Union’s women’s swimming and diving team beat Baldwin Wallace 206-66 and lost to Akron 251-48 in a double dual meet on Friday night.

Top Finishers

  • 200-yard medley relay: team consisting senior Alexis Schuller (Middleburg Heights / Berea-Midpark), freshman Charlotte Cohagan (Parma / Padua Franciscan), junior Maddie Horrigan (Hudson) and freshman Abby Calaway (Berea / Berea-Midpark) finished fifth with a time of 1:55.55
  • 1000-yard freestyle: sophomore Emma Kreber (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) finished fourth with a time of 11:12.21
  • 200-yard freestyle: Calaway finished fourth with a time of 1:57.48
  • 100-yard backstroke: Schuller finished third with a time of 1:03.62 and freshman Jordyn Miller (Strongsville) finished fourth with a time of 1:04.81
  • 200-yard butterfly: freshman Kayla Stewart (Marietta) finished fifth with a time of 2:29.14
  • 50-yard freestyle: Horrigan finished fifth with a time of 25.32
  • 100-yard freestyle: Cohagan finished fourth with a time of 56.41
  • 200-yard backstroke: Miller finished sixth with a time of 2:18.32
  • 200-yard breaststroke: Kreber finished fifth with a time of 2:50.99
  • 500-yard freestyle: Calaway finished fourth with a time of 5:20.54 and Schuller finished fifth with a time of 5:29.58
  • 100-yard butterfly: Horrigan finished fourth with a time of 1:00.65
  • One-meter dive: freshman Claire Fried (Kent / Kent Roosevelt) finished fourth with a score of 164.90
  • 200-yard individual medley: Miller finished fifth with a time of 2:26.80
  • 400-yard freestyle relay: team consisting of Schuller, Cohagan, Horrigan and Calaway finished fourth with a time of 3:46.79

The Raiders are back in action again tomorrow when they take on Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at 1 p.m. in Wilmington.

AKRON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women’s swimming and diving team was defeated by NCAA Division I University of Akron and Mount Union University at University of Akron inside Ocasek Natatorium.

BW (8-4) fell to Akron to a final score of 251-37 and Mount Union, 206-66

The Yellow Jackets individual highlights included:

  • Freshman Rachel Fibbi (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper Saint Clair) placed seventh in the 1,000-yard freestlye in a time of 12:27.26 and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:38.74
  • Freshman Ariel Lisy (Strongsville) placed ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:14.80
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference performer Bella Ratino (Mentor/Hawken) finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:05.52 and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:33.63
  • Junior Tia Reed (Bluffton, S.C.) finished fifth in 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:10.63 and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 57.88 seconds
  • Sophomore All-OAC Mallory Dondorfer (Mentor) placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:16.67 and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.55 seconds
  • Senior Aubrey Syron (Dayton / Archbishop Alter) placed eighth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:05.47

BW relays were highlighted by:

  • The 200-yard medley relay squad of RatinoReedSyron, and Dondorfer placed sixth in a time of 2:58.88
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Dondorfer, sophomore Athena Pantoja (Ashtabula/Lakeside), junior Lauren Slife (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) and Reed finished fifth in a time of 3:56.12

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Friday, January 27 when they close out the home portion of their schedule when they host a conference meet against John Carroll University at 6 p.m.
