Akron Closes Regular Season With Win Over Miami (OH)

OXFORD, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team concluded the regular season with a dual meet against MAC opponent, Miami. The Zips came out on top for the win 167-133.

The afternoon opened with a second and third place finish for the Zips relay teams in the 200 yard medley relay. Madelyn Gatrall (25.53), Sara Bozso (28.97), Abigal Daniel (23.92), and Aislinn Holder (23.17) combined for 1:41.59 to take the silver medal.

Elle Couture took first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:22.70 while her teammate Astrid Halvorsen was ten seconds behind her for third place. Gatrall then took third in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:52.37.

Weronika Gorecka earn Akron another individual win with a time of 54.53 in the 100 backstroke and Daniel took third at 55.19. Madeline Dyer (1:04.53), Bozso (1:04.73), and Claire Cox (1:04.78) took second, third, and fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Rachel Sabotin (2:01.30) and Maggie Patterson (2:04.12) went one-two in the 200 butterfly. Rebecca Reid had a third place finish in the 50 freestyle. Gorecka earned her second win with a 51.84 100 yard freestyle.

Gatrall finished the 200 yard backstroke in exactly two minutes to win the event. Reid took third with a 2:02.39. The Zips then swept the podium in the 200 yard breaststroke with Dyer (2:18.74), Bozso (2:18.95), and Giovanna Cappabianca (2:20.51) taking the top three.

In the 500 yard freestyle, Couture touched the wall second at 4:54.01 and Patterson touched third at 5:05.91. Daniel then won the 100 butterfly and Sabotin took second place in the 100 butterfly before she took third in the 200 IM.

Reid, Gatrall, Daniel, and Holder then closed out the meet with a 3:25.05 finish in the 400 yard freestyle.

Off the diving boards, Elizabeth Noble won the 1-meter event with a total score of 271.28 and McKenzie Dunigan earned 255.23 points for second place. Noble also won the 3-meter event with a score of 276.75.

The Zips will look to defend their MAC Championship and go for the three-peat beginning on Wednesday February 28 on the campus of Ohio University.

OXFORD, Ohio– The Miami University women’s swimming and diving team fell in competition to the University of Akron, on Friday, Feb. 2, by a score of 167-133.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The meet kicked off with the 200 medley relay, with the women’s A team finishing first. Madeline PadavicSara Lahrach-SanchezHonor Brodie-Foy and Nicole Maier turned in a combined time of 1:41.02.
  • In the 1000 freestyle, Audrey Conley had a second-place finish, coming in at 10:32.34.
  • Greta Kolbeck finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.07, while Julia Waechter took second (1:42.36).
  • Maier secured two first-place finishes, winning the 50 freestyle (22.82) and the 200 IM (2:02.89).
  • Lahrach-Sanchez finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.88 and Kolbeck took first in the 200 freestyle (4:53.41).
  • Padavic had other solid finishes today in individual races, coming in second in the 100 backstroke (54.90) and third in the 100 freestyle (52.02).
  • Other second-place finishes today came from Brodie-Foy in the 50 freestyle (23.72), Waechter in the 100 freestyle (51.85), Chrisna Bezuidenhout in the 200 backstroke (2:00.62) and Kaylin Herbet in the 200 IM (2:04.14).
  • Mady Bachmeier finished third in the 200 butterfly (2:05.86) and Brodie-Foy posted a third-place time of 56.48 during the 100 butterfly.
  • In diving events, Mia Meinhardt placed third in the 1-meter dive (253.73) and second in the 3-meter dive (234.60). Gretchen Osmun took third in the 3-meter (228.75).
  • The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay and Padavic, Brodie-Foy, Waechter and Maier took second place with a combined time of 3:25.18.

UP NEXT:
The men and women will both compete tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. against Xavier University for senior day at home.
