Akron Secures Verbal From Canadian Backstroker Madelyn Gatrall For 2020

Madelyn Gatrall of Windsor Aquatic Club in Ontario, Canada has made her verbal commitment to swim for the University of Akron in the fall of 2020. Primarily a backstroker and middle-distance freestyler, Gatrall will join the Zips fresh off their most recent Mid American Conference Championship season in 2019.

At the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials, Gatrall took 19^th place in the 50 LCM backstroke (29.99), 30^th in the 100 LCM backstroke (1:03.88), and 35^th in the 200 LCM backstroke (2:20.10). She was also the 2019 Spring Ontario Swimming Championships 100 LCM backstroke champion (1:04.30).

Gatrall will be able to score points for the Zips right away at the conference level; her best times in the backstroke races would have secured her spots in the ‘B’ final, but senior 100-yard backstroke conference champion Sadie Fazekas will have graduate when she arrives. She will join Giovanna Cappabianca, Madeline Dyer, Maggie Clough, and Rachel Sabotin as members of the Zips class of 2024 and will be pushed well in practice by fellow backstroker Clough.
