BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team broke three meet records and took top place in eight of the ten events at the Tom Stubbs Relays in Bowling Green, Ohio on Friday afternoon.
“I am very impressed with the energy our ladies brought on the pool deck tonight,” said head coach Brian Peresie. “Our attitudes and efforts were off the charts and we will look to take this momentum into the season in a few short weeks.”
The Zips promptly began the night at Cooper pool sweeping the first three events on the evening.
A year ago the Akron 200 medley relay team broke the meet record (1:44.41) in the event. The 2016 relay team of senior Luka Szynal (Lublin, Poland), junior Paloma Marrero Munoz(Merida, Spain), and sophomores Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) and Sadie Fazekas(Windsor, Ontario) broke that record by .10 of a second by clocking in at 1:44.31.
The Zips followed up their first place finish in the 200 medley relay with one in the 3X100 butterfly event. Junior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio), Engel, and Fazekas swam a swift time of 2:52.38 to touch first.
The 3X100 backstroke relay team of Szynal, senior Laura Savariau (Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, France), and freshman Madison Myers (Copley, Ohio), finished the event in a time of 2:45.44 which bettered the previous meet record of 2:48.33.
Akron would again take control of the events in the 800 free relay, 400 medley relay, and 200 free relay finishing in first in all three events.
Freshman Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.), Savariau, sophomore Emma King (Centerville, Ohio), and Fazekas swam the 800 free in 7:43.83. In the 400 medley, Szynal, Marrero, freshmanJessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio), and Myers clocked in a 3:50.05, while the relay team of Franz, Savariau, Engel and Fazekas broke the meet record in the 200 free relay with a dashing time of 1:35.42.
UA closed out the event with back-to-back first place finishes in the final two events, the 4X100 IM relay (3:56.68) and the 400 free relay (3:30.92).
Akron begins the 2016-17 regular season at home, the Ocasek Natatorium, on Oct. 28, when the Zips go head-to-head with Ball State.
