Alabama 100 Back Champ James Courtney Opts to Swim for Tar Heels

James Courtney has verbally committed to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for 2017-18. Currently a senior at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabama, Courtney is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

Courtney is the reigning AHSAA State Champion in the 100 backstroke. He won the event at the 2015 state meet last December with 49.89, just off the All-American Auto cut he’d gone in prelims, 49.81. He also placed sixth in the 100 free, led off St. Paul’s medley relay, and anchored their 400 free relay.

Courtney swims club for the City of Mobile Swim Association under Greg Davis. His best long course times are from the 2015 Season, as he was injured and had to miss his last meet (his only full rest meet of the summer) this past long course season. Fully recovered, Courtney is looking forward to updating his times this year.

Currently, his best times are:

  • 50 backstroke: 24.00 SCY/27.61 LCM
  • 100 backstroke: 49.81 SCY/58.60 LCM
  • 200 backstroke: 1:47.60 SCY/ 2:07.11 LCM

they’ve been doing that for athletes for 2 decades and longer.

death sentence in all sports, NCAA……..snap to it.
