Alex Shackell Continues Surge, Hits 50.97 100 Fly To Move To #2 In 15-16 Age Group

2022 WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

Coming off an impressive triple in last night’s finals session, Carmel Swim Club’s Alex Shackell continued her hot streak during Friday morning’s preliminary session from the Winter Junior – East Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Shackell dropped a time of 50.97 in the girls’ 100 butterfly, resetting her best time and becoming just the second swimmer in the 15-16 age group to break 51 seconds.

The 16-year-old leapfrogs Beata Nelson for #2 all-time among 15-16 girls, trailing only U.S. Olympian Claire Curzan, who owns the National Age Group Record at 49.51.

Shackell had previously ranked third in the age group with the 51.21 she posted at this meet last year.

In that swim, she actually had the exact same opening 50 split as she did in this morning’s prelims, 23.79, but was over two-tenths quicker on the back half on Friday.

14-year-old standout Charlotte Crush qualified second into the girls’ 100 fly final in a time of 51.52, while Canadian standout Summer McIntosh advanced third in 51.91.

During Thursday’s finals session, Shackell won the girls’ 200 IM (1:54.54) and 50 free (21.73) back-to-back, moving into sixth and second all-time in the 15-16 age group, respectively. She finished things off by splitting 50.94 on the fly leg for Carmel in the 400 medley relay, propelling the club to the win and a new meet record.

McIntosh notably split 50.90 on Sarasota’s relay, indicating she could very well challenge Shackell for the victory tonight.

Shackell is coming off a breakout summer in long course, notably winning gold in the 100 fly at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in August.
