Alexandra Volk Announces Verbal Commitment to Swim at Division 1 James Madison

Alexandra Volk of Lutherville, Maryland has announced her commitment to swim and study at James Madison University for the fall of 2022.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at James Madison University. I want to thank my family, coaches, and friends who have helped me get to this point. GO DUKES!!”

Volk swims year-round at the Eagle Swim Team under Coach Scott Ward in Owings Mills, Maryland. She is also a rising senior at Notre Dame Prep High School, where she competes at the high school level. At the Richmond Sectionals meet back in May, Volk was a finalist in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 200 butterfly. Her highest finish came in the 50 freestyle where she finished 12th overall (27.02).

Best Times SCY

  • 50 free – 23.79
  • 100 free – 52.10
  • 200 free – 1:51.79
  • 100 fly – 57.35
  • 200 fly – 2:05.01

When she arrives at JMU in the fall of 2022, Volk will be a strong asset to the program on both the individual and relay levels. Her best times in the 50 and 100 freestyle would have ranked her 4th on JMU’s roster last season, putting her in the position to contribute to the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. With a small improvement on her best time in the 200 freestyle, Volk may also be used on the 800 freestyle relay. Individually, Volk will add depth to the team’s butterfly group, especially in the 200 butterfly, where JMU only had 2 swimmers compete over the entire season last year.

With her best times in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Volk would have made the B-final at the 2021 CAA Championships. In addition, she would have placed just out of scoring range in the 100 butterfly, where it took a 57.08 to make it back for a second swim. The James Madison women won the 2021 CAA Championship with a total of 829 points. The team saw multiple victories, including a victory in the women’s 100 butterfly from Madison Cottrell. Only a freshman last season. Cottrell will overlap two seasons with Volk once she arrives on campus.

With her commitment, Volk joins breaststroker Ann Chappell Ellington in James Madison’s class of 2026.
