Alexandra Wenk picked up her first international medal on Sunday at 2015 European Short Course Championships in Netanya, Israel, claiming bronze in the 100 meter butterfly with 56.43. That was the second time in as many days that Wenk broke the German national record in the event.
Coming into the meet, Wenk’s fastest time in the 100 fly was 57.18 and the German national record stood at 56.94; it had been set by Antje Buschschulte when she won the gold medal at the 2006 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Helskinki. On Saturday Wenk took down that mark, dipping under 57 seconds for the first time with 56.48. In Sunday’s final, Wenk was .05 faster, lowering her own German record before the ink was dry in the record books. Wenk’s reaction time in the final was .67, compared to .74 in the semi-final, accounting for some of the improvement over the first 50 meters.
