Ali DeLoof Becomes 4th Fastest American Ever After Blistering 100 BK

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a very impressive USA College Challenge meet representing the US National Team as they faced off against the Big Ten, Ali DeLoof has carried over that momentum to the Short Course World Championships in Windsor. In Indianapolis Deloof had two 50-point swims in the 100 yard back, incredibly quick and not too far off the American record.

We are only through one session thus far in Windsor at the SC World Championships, but she’s already made her presence known. In the women’s 100 back prelims, DeLoof posted a time of 56.40, the 3rd fastest of the morning and 4th fastest ever done by an American, and the 16th fastest ever.

She moves past a few big names on the US list, including Kathleen BakerMissy Franklin and Olivia Smoliga with still the semis and finals to come. The American record stands at 55.92 set by Courtney Bartholomew at the Duel In the Pool last December. Here’s a look at the current top ten rankings among Americans:

  1. Courtney Bartholomew, 55.92
  2. Natalie Coughlin, 55.97
  3. Tori Delollo, 56.36
  4. Ali DeLoof, 56.40
  5. Claire Adams, 56.45
  6. Olivia Smoliga, 56.64
  7. Missy Franklin, 56.73
  8. Kathleen Baker, 57.07
  9. Felicia Lee, 57.36
  10. Elizabeth Pelton, 57.64

Deloof will also compete in the 50 back here in Windsor, and anchored the American 400 free relay this morning in 53.44. She will also no doubt be given the lead-off spot on the American 200 and 400 medley relays after her swim this morning.

DeLoof sits 3rd behind Canada’s Kylie Masse (56.02) and world record holder/Olympic champ Katinka Hosszu (56.16), putting herself in prime position to qualify for the final tomorrow night. She is slated to swim in the second semi-final, expected to go off at about 7:45 PM. Finals get underway at 6:30 ET.

Deloof or DeLoof?

She has improved a lot in the last few months. She broke the minute last summer in long course. Clearly in the current top 5 of best US backstrokers with Bilquist, Baker, Smoliga and of course Franklin.

I am 99% sure Tori Delollo is on that list erroneously. She was a good swimmer, but that is probably a SCY time.

According to the USA Swimming times database, that is her official SCM 100 back time (56.36) swum in March 2001 at the “2001 US Ad Short Course” meet. However, since this is faster than the world record at that time (Reiko Nakamura’s 58.45), it seems to be a mistake in the times database.

It looks like Tori Delollo’s time in this top ten SCM list is a mistake, and a mistake in USA swimming’s list. According to USA swimming’s own records, she swam that time in 2001. However, it would have been faster than Natalie Coughlin’s world record at the time, which was 57:08. (No offense to Tori, she was a great swimmer. This may have been a yards time though.)

What about hellen Moffitt’s prelim swim this morning? Wouldn’t that rank her above Pelton?

Agreed. Looks like Hellen Moffitt has joined the all time US top ten.
