All-Time Division I Mid-Major Conference Swimming Titles

With conference championships season finally here, we decided to put together all of the past conference champions. See below for the number of each championship in each conference.

Many of the conferences include teams that have shifted out of the conference. Some teams, due to shifting as well, have won conference titles in multiple conferences.

The most dominant team has been Utah out of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), although the Utes have now moved to the Pac-12. The same can be said for Pittsburgh which was dominant in the Big East but has now moved to the ACC.

Out of the 43 titles won on the Big East men’s side, only nine of them were by schools who are still members of the conference. Those nine include Xavier (6), Seton Hall (2), and Villanova (1).

Most of the mid-major conferences have been relatively even on conference titles. Part of this is due to such common shifting in conferences which can be seen in teams such as Oakland, La Salle, and Loyola who have won titles in multiple conferences.

The most dominant teams still in their respective conference are Navy on both the men’s and women’s side in the Patriot League, Oakland as both the men and women have won eight straight titles since entering the Horizon League, and UMass (men) and Richmond (women) which are both still members of the Atlantic-10.

Power 5 All-time Conference Titles coming soon.

No love for the Gauchos’ domination of the Big West under Gregg Wilson? Quite a run in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Major mistake in AE conference Vermont is not listed and they have won the most conference championships in AE . On target for another this year as they are 12-1 and five games ahead of second with five to play.

Regarding the Mid-America Conference, taken directly from Google: The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team hold the record for the most MAC Championships in a single sport, 31, which they won in Men’s Swimming and Diving in 1978, 1980–1996, 1998, 2000–2005, 2007–2012, and 2014. —–EMU cut the winningest MAC team ever in 2018

Emu’s swimming is a complete mess rn. There pool has been broken since last April and they still have yet to fix it. Their women’s team is swimming in a six lane pool that was built in the 1970’s.

Ball State’s home pool is a 6 lane 25 yard pool that was built in the 60s. And yet they’re making some moves in the MAC. It’s not about the facility you train in, it’s how you use it.

Administration at EMU is horrible. Have been sued for hiding sexual assaults’ and murders. Then they get rid of their best sport (and the best mid-major program, at least in terms of titles won) that arguably worsened their finances (according to an EMU accounting professor). Says they lost out-of-state paying students and monies from the NCAA. And kept their largest expense (pool) open for the women’s team. And now it is broken. My sense is they will get rid of the woman’s team. Don’t know any inside info on that, but would be a typical move by the EMU administration.

Really can’t find info on the MAC? https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/mac-sports/documents/2020/2/14/MSD_RecordBook_2019.pdf

EMU Men’s program one of the most dominate Mid-Majors in history with 34 Championships

Not to mention one of the most legendary swimmers in history as well, Gordon Wheeler of the Miami RedHawks.
