Alyssa Sorensen Switches Commitment from BYU to Utah for 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

The Woodlands Swim Team’s Alyssa Sorensen, who had originally committed to follow her siblings Ryan, Chad, and Allie to BYU, has switched her commitment to the University of Utah’s class of 2025.

“With lots of thought and consideration, I’m grateful for the opportunity to announce my verbal commitment to further my swimming and academic career at The University of Utah. Thank you to the Utah coaches and all the people who have been part of this crazy process. GO UTES❤️”

Sorensen will graduate this spring from The Woodlands High School, where she earned a 2021 Highlander Leadership Award. She was a contributor to the swim team’s 2021 UIL Texas 6A State Championship, competing in the 100 breast (7th, 1:05.31) and swimming breast (28.83) on the 5th-place 200 medley relay. She went a lifetime best in the 100 breast at Regionals, going 1:04.09 in the final.

Sorensen swims year-round with TWST. Although she hasn’t had many opportunities to race in the last year, she has improved both her 100 breast and 100 fly times, as well as her 50/500 free times.

  • 100 breast – 1:04.09
  • 200 breast – 2:23.66
  • 200 IM – 2:10.02
  • 400 IM – 4:40.66
  • 100 fly – 58.28

Sorensen will suit up for the Utes with Anelise Hedges, Anna Brooker, Haily Payne, Krystal Lieu, Madison Story, Maile Andresen, Milla Ruthven, Molly Jacobson, Norah Hay, Sofia Carlson, and Sydney Rogness in the fall.

My grandson was being recruited by BYU & had an “in home recruiting visit” with Coach Brooks. I’m glad that he chose not to go there what with the coaching change occurring. I’m a bit bewildered though. BYU men won their conference meet & I believe the women came in second. Coach Brooks was also named Coach of the Year by that conference. Program was showing a bit of improvement. Knowing that, I’m a bit befuddled why BYU decided not to renew his contract? Must be something other than the team’s performances this past season?

Pretty sure the head coach is not longer the head coach… could see some changes in the coaching staff this year because of it

If they were smart they’d let the new interim HC choose her assistants… if she keeps the ones currently there, then there’s not a whole lot that will help them

BYU has lost another great swimmer due to poor recruiting and team management, it is really a shame.

Again, this is just an interesting switch. Is she Mormon?

Odd to see someone decide not to go to BYU especially when faith was probably a big factor in her decision.

Yes, their family is- they are originally from Utah (albeit over 15 years ago), so they have family there.

When push comes to shove, if you have the option of going to BYU or a Pac12 school, you go to the better swimming program.

I think most would honestly put their faith and the chance to represent BYU over greater opportunities.

Rarely do you see someone like Jabari Parker choose to attend Duke or something like it over BYU.

For reference, a swimmer I swam against routinely growing up chose BYU over Stanford.

Probably didn’t get $ at Stanford or if they did it didn’t make a difference- LDS tuition is like 2k per semester at BYU.

If you choose to swim for BYU over Stanford then that’s 100% a financial decision

Is there any timeline on when the high school recruit ranks will come out this year?

What’s with all of these switches?

When you have this many coaching changes there will also be changes of plan for swimmers.

That’s crazy. I think this system of recruiting needs to be changed, I don’t think anyone will do anything about it though.

just wait when these people hear about transfers market on the next level in this thing called college football. Nice way to new coach to reload immediately as new earlier letter of intent signing date has destroyed recruiting for new coach, there is year zero and maybe on second year you can have some recruiting.
