WASHINGTON – With wins in 26 of 32 events, the American University men’s and women’s swim and dive teams swept visiting VMI on Senior Day at the Reeves Aquatic Center. The women rolled to a 236-55 victory with wins in 15 events, while the men won 168-130 and had 11 total victories.
Notable Women’s Results
- Senior Mimi Watts and sophomore Isabel McGovern each won two individual events and two relays to lead the women’s side.
- Watts teamed up with McGovern, sophomore Grace Netz and sophomore Dylan Moulton for a 200 medley relay win to start the day.
- In the 100 backstroke, Watts went 56.44 for the win while juniors Amaya Tomma and Laura Laux took second and third.
- Watts finished the 50 free in 24.03 for her second individual victory, followed in second and third by Moulton and Laux.
- McGovern won the 200 fly in 2:09.23, and her time of 58.30 earned her a win in the 100 fly while senior Mary Barto and Tomma placed second and third.
- Seniors Mallory Meister and Nicole Behrens went 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle with Meister winning in 11:05.32, and freshman Fiona McMahon placed third.
- Moulton had an individual win in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.93, followed by freshman Natalie Webb in second place.
- Junior diver Peyton Thurman took first place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter, while senior Amanda Bosses was second on the 3-meter and third on the 1-meter. Sophomore Maggie Fanning placed second on the 1-meter and third on the 3-meter.
- Senior Sasha Uspenskaya won the 200 free in 55.96 while McMahon took second.
- In the 200 backstroke, Tomma and sophomore Gabby Kaczorowski went 1-2 in 2:11.99 and 2:12.18, respectively.
- Sophomore Katie Yoo won two individual events, the 200 breaststroke (2:30.50) and the 400 IM (4:40.10).
- Freshman Kate Williams, Webb and sophomore Veronica Lester finished first, second and third, respectively, in the 500 free with Williams finishing in 5:11.87.
- The foursome of Watts, Moulton, Laux and McGovern won the 200 free relay in 1:38.81 to end the meet on a strong note for the women.
Notable Men’s Results
- Seniors Nick Buckley and Caleb Farris along with junior Aidan Delehanty all earned three wins, including two in relays for the Eagles.
- The trio teamed up with senior Will Deitch for a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:33.54, which is 13th all-time at AU.
- Delehanty went 53.07 for an individual win in the 100 backstroke.
- Buckley finished in 21.25 to win the 50 freestyle.
- Farris got his solo victory in the 100 fly with a time of 51.06.
- Junior Seamus Brown won the 1,000 free (10:06.74) and 500 free (4:42.14), followed by freshman Brent Hinckley who took second in both events.
- Senior Carlos Cordero earned an exciting win in the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:46.60.
- Sophomore Daniel Coughlin and sophomore Madan Morris went 1-2 in the 200 fly, with Coughlin posting a winning time of 1:57.80.
- Junior Griffin Batt took the top spot on both the 1-meter and 3-meter, with his 1-meter score of 267.00 being a new personal best that improves upon his own fourth spot all-time at AU. Batt had another strong score of 258.60 on the 3-meter.
- To cap the day, Buckley, Delehanty and Farris teamed up with sophomore Colin Clough for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:26.10.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The VMI Swim and Dive Teams returned to action on Saturday when they traveled to American. The Keydets had a strong showing, including a number of personal records in the diving events.
“It was a really solid showing for our squads this afternoon in D.C. coming off of a great training camp,” said head coach Scott Thacker.
Diving’s Best
– Lane Jones (258.22), Ryder Creal (194.47) and Craig Swain (157.80) finish 2-3-4 in the men’s 3-meter dive (all PR’s)
– Jones, Creal and Swain had the same order of finish in the 1-meter, registering PR’s of 230.62, 204.00, and 152.47, respectively
– Ella Davenport scored a 148.20 in the women’s 1-meter dive and a 166.87 in the 3-meter event (both PR’s)
Men’s Top Swimmers
– The quartet of Tinn Nguyen, Chase Lane, Elijah Fields and Matthew Picard earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.12) as VMI took 2-3 in that event
– Nguyen claimed the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.09 while Layne Tucker (58.94), Chase Lane (59.09) and Austin Reeder (59.74) finished 1-2-3 in the 100 yard breaststroke
– Matthew Picard (21.58) placed second in the 50 free, claiming first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.00
– Sam Castle claimed first in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in 1:57.97, and Ethan Giffith took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.78), also winning the 400 yard IM (4:14.53)
Women’s Swimming Superlatives
– Noelle Tong, Walde Wilder, Jillian Maher and Kate Taylor earned the Keydets two points with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:35.12)
– Rachel Greathouse place third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.32) while Anne Bowles (1:09.28) and Wilder (1:11.12) placed 1-2 in the 100 yard breaststroke
– Wilder continued her strong day in the 200 breaststroke, finishing second with a time of 2:34.09, and Greathouse registered a third-place finish in the 400 yard IM (4:59.75)
