Americans Jump Back to Top of Medal Table After 3 Days

With a pair of gold medals, the United States has reclaimed their spot atop the medal table with 4 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze. The pair of gold medals from Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers in the 100 backstrokes nudged them ahead of France, who is having an outstanding meet.

By historical comparison, the French only won a single gold in 2008, and only had 4 all-time. coming into this meet.

The Japanese have four total medals, but all of them are bronze. The Japanese’s medal record at the Olympics, in terms of gold medal ratios, is better than it is at Worlds, but they still are having trouble getting over the hump and topping the podium.

As for the top four, all four of those teams have an opportunity at more gold on Tuesday, so these standings should continue to shake up. The women’s 200 free could be a separator, with the United States, France, and Australia holding the top three seeds.

Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
1  United States 4 5 3 12
2  France 3 0 0 3
3  China 2 2 1 5
4  Australia 1 2 1 4
5  Lithuania 1 0 0 1
 South Africa 1 0 0 1
7  South Korea 0 2 0 2
8  Brazil 0 1 0 1
 Netherlands 0 1 0 1
10  Japan 0 0 4 4
11  Great Britain 0 0 1 1
 Russia 0 0 1 1

I also forgot to mention the women’s 200 free. With Missy’s win and Alison’s performance in the 400, that event has serious medal considerations.

How about Katie Ledecky and Kate Ziegler in the 800 free? They could possibly medal.

Right now, it appears that Team USA is still in a very good position of maintaining a lead in the overall medal table and our individual medalists still have numerous opportunities to equal the high standards we saw at 2008 Games.
I understand that due to Phelps ’08 domination, the overall individual gold medal count that Team USA achieved will be extremely difficult to (possibly ever) match.
However, compared to previous Olympic team medals, I think this year’s women’s squad have made great advances and improvement’s in terms of their individual medal performances.
Missy appears that she will equal, if not better Natalie’s 2004 and 2008 individual medal performance + there should be 2 more relay medals… Read more »

France is swimming very well & will look to add to that with Agnel & Muffat slated for more events. Lacourt was the major disappointment being shut out of the medals in the 100 back.
