Amherst Women Trump Middlebury

Amherst’s women’s team beat Middlebury handily in the dual meet on Saturday, December 7th. The final score was 183-111, with Amherst swimming exhibition to close out the meet.

Amherst began the meet right with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The squad of Sabrina Lee, Emily Hyde, Sarah Conklin and Lulu Belak touched first in 1:48.00, ahead of second place Middlebury (1:48.77).

Immediately thereafter, the distance ladies kicked it into gear. Charlotte Chudy and Audrey Ingerson went 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle, 10:45.59 to 10:48.59, respectively. Middlebury’s Cori West was third with a 10:49.54.

The 200 freestyle also was a 1-2 victory to Amherst – Stephanie Ternullo dominated the field to claim the victory in 1:55.52, followed by Belak (1:57.07). Morgan Burke of Middlebury took third (1:59.45).

Lee was the only swimmer under a minute in the 100 backstroke, taking the win by over two seconds in 58.67. She was followed by Andie Tibbetts (1:01.02) and Maddie Pierce (1:02.59) of Middlebury in second and third, respectively.

Middlebury claimed its first event win in the 100 breaststroke. Jamie Hillas touched in at 1:06.35 to take the win. Amherst’s Hyde was second in 1:07.60. Jennifer Koide of Middlebury was third in 1:08.84.

Amherst grabbed control again in the 200 butterfly. Conklin ran away with the victory, finishing first by over five seconds at 2:08.49. Teammate Cassie Gross followed in 2:14.10. Middlebury’s Lily Sawyer was third (2:15.73).

Middlebury took control of the diving events – Colleen Harper and Adrianna Baker were 1-3 on both one and three meter. On one meter, the duo scored 232.27 and 177.30, respectively. On three meter, they were 217.27 and 174.75. Amherst snuck Lizzy Linsmayer in for second in both events, scoring 224.47 on one meter and 208.35 on three meter.

In the 100 freestyle, Amherst was back on track. Belak returned to claim the victory (54.08) followed by Courtney Haron of Middlebury in second (55.30). Ashleigh Stoddart of Amherst was third in 56.24.

Lee dded another victory to Amherst’s tally, crushing the field in the 200 backstroke. She won in 2:09.43 – by nearly seven whole seconds. Caroline Kelly and Elinor Reinhardt of Middlebury were second and third (2:16.29 and 2:16.56).

After a runner up finish in the 100, Hyde returned ready for gold in the 200. She outtouched Middlebury’s Hillas for the victory, 2:25.23 to 2:25.64. Abby Hahn was third for Amherst (2:29.01).

Chudy returned to the pool for the 500, along with teammate Stephanie Ternullo. Ternullo took the crown (5:09.88), and Chudy was runner up (5.17.08). Sara Swett was third (5:18.71) for Middlebury.

The 100 butterfly went to Conklin – at 57.92, she was the fastest swimmer in the pool by almost four seconds. Middlebury’s Megan Griffin was second (1:01.73) and Amherst’s Allison Merz was third (1:01.90).

Hyde claimed the win in the final individual event of the day – the 200 IM. She swam a 2:10.76 to wrap up the final event win for Amherst. Middlebury’s Hillas was second (2:12.45) and Hyde’s teammate Hahn took third (2:16.07).

The final race of the day was the 200 freestyle relay. Amherst’s team of Lee, Belak, Conklin and Stoddart touched first in 1:39.52; however, they were swimming exhibition, so the event win went to Middlebury’s squad: Burke, Griffin, Tibbetts and Haron (1:41.66).
