Coleman Stewart produced the first World Record of the 2021 ISL season on Sunday with a stunning 48.33 effort in the 100 meter backstroke, taking more than half-a-second from his previous lifetime best, set Saturday at 48.91, an American Record.

The 100 meter backstroke World Record Sunday is the first of Stewart’s career. Stewart spent the maximum of 60 meters underwater and only took 34 strokes in the race.

STEWART STROKE COUNT, 48.33:

  • 1st 25: 8 strokes
  • 2nd 25: 8 strokes
  • 3rd 25: 8 strokes
  • 4th 25: 10 strokes
  • Total: 34 strokes

Kliment Kolesnikov, the former World Record holder in the event, took a total of 44 strokes when he went 48.58 in 2020. By comparison, Stewart made much better use of the underwaters.

KOLESNIKOV STROKE COUNT, 48.58:

  • 1st 25: 10 strokes
  • 2nd 25: 11 strokes
  • 3rd 25: 11 strokes
  • 4th 25: 12 strokes
  • Total: 44 strokes

In the yards version of the race, Stewart is the 2nd-fastest performer all-time with a lifetime best of 43.62. In that race, Stewart took 7 strokes on the first 3 lengths and then 8 strokes on the final 25 yards, making for a mere 29 strokes total, once again maximizing his underwater dolphin kick.

Stewart’s 48.33 knocked 0.25 from Kolesnikov‘s 2020 World Record, set at the ISL Season 2 Final. Stewart’s swim also jackpotted the entire field, stealing all the points from the competition, resulting in a 37-point haul for the Cali Condors. Stewart’s 7-swimmer jackpot was the first in ISL history.

Off topic. Just saw Jazz Carlin posted on instagram that she’s with energy standard. Anyone knows what her role is? Will she work as team coach?

Great analysis! Coleman Stewart, the mythical child of Coleman Hodges and Mel Stewart.

My critique: (1) slow/glided needed extra stroke into the first wall and bad/ off timed finish. He also could have accelerated his tempo on the third 25. Other than that…sick!

Crazy murphy isn’t in the top ten

Know he doesn’t swim short course as much, but still, he’s been pro for awhile and was amazing at yards

Everyone ahead of Murphy on that list must have been juiced. Ask Murphy if you do not believe me.
