Anastasiya Shkurdai Sets European Junior and Belarusian 50 Fly (SCM) Records

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

16 year-old Anastasiya Shkurdai of Belarus set both an overall national record and a European junior record with her time of 25.34 today in the semi-finals of the women’s 50 fly at the 2019 European Short Course Championships in Glasgow.

The national record had previously stood at 25.53, set by Aliaksandra Herasimenia at the 2012 edition of this meet. Herasimenia also holds the national records about a half dozen sprint-oriented SCM events, while Shkurdai has the national record in the 200 back.

It appears that Shkurdia is the first official European junior record holder in the event by way of beaming the first person to dip under the 25.52 time standard that was set up when European junior records were established.

Shkurdai will get another chance to break both records again later this session during the finals of the event.

Update: Shkurdai again lowered the records in the final, going 25.28. She’s now just .14 seconds from the world junior record, a 25.14 set by Japan’s Rikako Ikee back in 2017.
