After setting the women’s 100 free Israeli national record at the 2021 European Championships at 54.18, Andi Murez has solified her 100 free spot for the Tokyo Olympics at 54.23. Earlier in the meet, Murez shaved a tenth off of her own 200 free national record at 1:57.87.
17-year-old Anastasia Gorbenko won her 4th national title in Netanya in the 400 IM, setting a new lifetime best at 4:43.83. While her time was off the 4:38.53 FINA A cut, the teen already has five A cuts for the Olympics. This past weekend, Gorbenko had set two national records and one national junior record throughout the weekend affair: the 200 breast (2:28.38 prelims, 2:25.20 finals) and 50 free (25.03) and well as the 100 fly junior record (58.51).
Because of her efforts, Gorbenko was named women’s meet MVP. Tomer Frankel was named meet MVP on the men’s side, thanks to his 51.81 100 fly national record effort.
Also highlighting the session was the men’s 100 free, where four Israeli men swam under 50 seconds: Meiron Cheruti (49.23), Tomer Frankel (49.27), Denis Loktev (49.42) and Gal Cohen Groumi (49.62).
At the end of the meet, the Maccabi Haifa club won the overall team standings for the first time in 31 years. The team features some of the top swimmers in the nation, including Lea Polonsky, Ron Polonsky, Aviv Barzelay and Cheruti.
