Cal All-American Andrew Seliskar is absent from the entries for the upcoming 2017 U.S. Nationals, which serve as the World Championships Trials. Psych sheets dropped on Friday morning, but there’s no sign of Seliskar in any event. Notably, Seliskar hasn’t competed since 2017 NCAAs.
Seliskar was a contender for a top 8 spot in a handful of events thanks to his versatility. He would’ve likely made the National Team roster in one of his events. Since starting with the Cal Bears during the 2015-16 season, his focus had mostly been on the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 fly, but he’s also been a key player in the 200 free as a part of Cal’s 800 free relay.
During the 2016-17 NCAA season, Seliskar had a great showing in the IMs at the 2017 NCAA Championships. He earned All-American status in both events, as well as the 200 fly. His highest finish came in the 400 IM, wehre he swam the 2nd fastest time in school history and placed 2nd behind American Record holder Chase Kalisz. Seliskar was a 3-time individual champion at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships as a sophomore.
A spokesperson for Cal confirmed that Seliskar would not be competing at Nationals. No further information has yet been made available.
I heard he is training for dancing with the stars with Natalie Coughlin
This is a good summer to take a break. He’s got 2 NCAA seasons and then possibly one post grad year for the 2020 trials. Take a mental & physical break, take a few summer courses to focus on GPA and future plans outside of swimming, etc. He’s a really bright guy, Thomas Jefferson HS in NoVa & he has followed a challenging itinerary on the academic side. He has great things ahead for himself outside of swimming.
So Thomas Jefferson named high schools are still on the good list ? Wait till Norleans Mitch joins his sister in DC World . . All his statues will be sliced off their pedsetals .
Ignoring the obvious sarcasm here, TJ is notoriously difficult to get into and difficult to succeed at.
It’s a high school and he was a potential olympic athlete.
I was thinking more about the slave owning of TJ . Seems he’s still in tbe good books in Fairfax County & slave owning not a stain like Norleans . The 70% majority Asian students & parents wouldn’t give 2 hoots & blacks are only 4% . Carry on .
He’s so bright that he couldn’t make the PAC12 All-Academic team(you need a 3.0 GPA or better to be eligible) huh?
There’s something odd about that PAC-12 All-Academic team. Cal released a list of 7 men who were named CSCAA Academic All-Americans (3.50 and swam in NCAA’s), but only Murphy was on the PAC-12 team. How can you make the tougher CSCAA list without making the conference list?
If he doesn’t think he has a chance to make the World Team, then why bother to swim at the meet at this point in his career.
Rest from hard training can be good both physically and psychologically.
He’s not done, he’s just biding his time for now
might as well just swim Olympic trials every 4 years and skip everything else…
I’m sure Andrew is taking a break for a reason, whatever that is.
Isn’t there a story on Swim Swam about him recovering from an Illness of some sort?
Seliskar broke his arm before Pac-12’s. He has been trying to recover since.
If true we should expect gigantic drops next year
He swam in the NCAA meet with a broken arm? He made the A final in 3 events. How did he do that?
Pretty incredible.
These days a tiny fine line stress fracture in a vertebrae counts as a broken back especially with instagram fitness models .Dey be doing amazin thangs with broken backs.
Michael Taylor is out of the backstroke events.
If Swimswam is posting about Seliskar’s absence, why haven’t they posted about Cordes being absent from the psych sheets
Wallaby – we’re trying to confirm with Cordes and USA Swimming whether his absence on the psych sheets is an accidental omission or not. Stay tuned!
Remember when Dressel took the summer before college easy to give himself a breather? Maybe this is the kind of thing Seliskar is doing, just a couple years older.
I believe Dressels was more about re-finding his love for swimming, but you may be right.
When he went 1:55 in the 2fly, he did 20 dolphin kicks off each wall. I was hoping to see him swim this at Nationals.
That’s a bit of an exaggeration. 20 dolphin kicks for a swimmer of his caliber would take him past 15m
Correct. Actually, it was 10 which is amazing. I can’t imagine doing this off the 3rd turn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku15qwsysvc
