Andrew Wilson No Shows 50 Breast Prelims At World Championships

2019 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

American Andrew Wilson failed to show for his preliminary heat in the men’s 50 breaststroke during day three action from the 2019 World Championships.

Wilson was coming off a lifetime best performance in the 100, where he clocked in at 58.95 in the semi-finals. He followed that up with a strong 59.11 in the final, placing sixth overall.

The 25-year-old wasn’t a favorite to medal in this event, coming in seeded 16th with a best of 27.15, and appears to be shifting his focus to the 200m event.

This came shortly after news broke that both Katie Ledecky and Emma McKeon were withdrawing from the women’s 200 freestyle due to illness.

In his absence, his teammate Michael Andrew advanced through to the semi-finals in 11th place in a time of 27.02. Adam Peaty put up the top time of the morning in 26.28.

Wilson is seeded 11th in the 200 breast, and is also expected to be relied upon on both the mixed and men’s medley relays.

Sorry, I think this is the right decision. We need Wilson as fresh as possible for the relay. He is not throwing away a spot that would have otherwise gone to another swimmer based on the selection criteria.

With two, hopefully three 200s (and possibly a mixed relay 100) before the big relay at the end of the meet, he is better off focusing on his 100 and 200 stroke. He already tweeted that he felt he was spinning his wheels in the 100 prelim, and got his 58 when he adjusted to a more measured first 50 in semis (and none of his walls in any of the three swims were great, even the 58).

Fine-tuning his… Read more »

Also, I think they have been strategizing this for awhile. Wilson didn’t even swim this at Nats last summer.

Seriously it’s a 50 not a 1500. I think you’ll recover. On the other hand what’s the point

I find it pretty humorous.. usually asking a question on social is just shouting into the void, leaving room for speculation. But here’s USA Swimming giving it to us straight!

There are only three pure us male breaststrokers at this meet MA Wilson and prenot and we certainly know that prenot wouldn’t ever swim this even if he had the A standard

Prenot could swim it as a first event of the meet. Get a warm up race in before his main event

He probably couldn’t because he didn’t have the A standard plus we didn’t want prenot smashing his hand on any walls 😮

Maybe I’m to old but for me I feel like if you raced to qualify for this race then you should race it. Someone finished 3rd at nationals and had to stay home that would love to be swimming it.

Not exactly. The 2nd spot the 50s stroke went to the winner of the 100. However Andrew won the 100 so then the spot when to the next fastest swimmer already on the roster.

Why not use king in the mixed relays a much bigger factor in comparison?
