Andrew Wilson Scratches B Final of 400 IM on Day 3 in Greensboro

All A-finals have remained in tact for Friday evening’s finals session at the 2019-2020 Pro Swim Series stop in Greensboro. There have been a few big names pull out of A finals, however, including Andrew Wilson.

Wilson was the 9th-fastest swimmer in the 400 IM prelims on Friday, touching in a time of 4:35.81. Wilson, better known as a breaststroker, does have some IM history to his name – although USA Swimming’s database doesn’t register any other 400 IMs in long course for him. He is the NCAA Division III National Record holder in the 200 yard IM, and with no breaststroke events on Fridays schedule, his 400 IM result was a positive one on what would have been an off-day otherwise. He split 1:09.93 on the breaststroke leg – nobody else in the field was faster than a 1:14.7 on that leg of their swim.

Recall that the #2 seed coming into the day, Abrahm Devine, declared a false start in prelims of that event.

Wilson’s scratch bumps George Washington University senior Emils Pone into the B-final. Pone is a Latvian national.

Other Day 3 Scratches:

• Kennedy Goss pulled out of the B final of the women’s 200 free, where she qualified 10th with a 2:02.66 in prelims. That will allow her to focus instead on the next event, the 200 back, where she qualified 8th in 2:15.25. The 200 back is probably her best event individually, though the 200 free is what earned her a prelims relay spot on the 2016 Canadian Olympic Team and an Olympic bronze medal. The scratch bumps Camille Cheng into the B-final.
• Kendyl Stewart pulled out of the 200 back B-final after swimming to a 16th-place finish in prelims in 2:17.21. After a 12th-place finish in the 100 free on Thursday, none of her primary events were on the Friday schedule. She’ll be focused on Saturday’s 100 fly, where she’s the #2 seed, instead. The scratch bumps 16-year old Paige Hall of Machine Aquatics in Virginia into the B-final.
• Sarah Bender from NOVA of Virginia scratched as the 15th qualifier in the women’s 400 IM finals. This was her only race on Friday, with her 4:57.28 being about 2.3 seconds slower than her lifetime best.

A reminder that on Friday, the A-finals will be televised on the Olympic Channel. That means that B-finals will be streamed on usaswimming.org only, while A-finals will flip to nbcsports.com and the Olympic Channel.
