Andrii Govorov to Join ADN Swim Project in Italy

The ADN Swim Project continues to grow, especially in the post-Soviet Eastern European region where they have become a leading face in training after the success in London of Evgeny Korotyshkin, the silver medalist in the 100 butterfly.

The latest addition to the lineup is Ukrainian 20-year old Andrii Govorov, who will work under the watchful eye of Italian coach Andrea di Nino and a staff that now includes Brazilian coach Arilson Silva. Di Nino, an Italian, was named the Russian swim coach of the year in 2012.

Govorov will find good sprint company: other members of the group include Sergey Fesikov, another Russian; Brazilians Henrique Martins and Bruno Fratus; Vitaly Melnikov; and Azerbaijan’s Yauheni Lazuka. Silva came over with Fratus after the Olympics from Brazil; Fratus should make a brilliant training partner for Govorov, as the 23-year old sprinter placed 4th in the 50 free at the Olympics.

Govorov’s specialty too is the speediest-of-speed, as he generally sticks to the 50 free and 50 fly. He was the 2011 European Short Course Champion in the latter event, as well as the 2010 Short Course Worlds silver medalist.

He made some progress in long course in 2012, with a bronze at the European Championships in the 50 free with a 22.18; but an even faster time at the Olympics (22.09 prelims, 22.12 semis) left him 14th overall and out of the final. He has good size a 6’3″, but the Ukrainians have been expecting more from the country’s premier pool swimmer. The country is best known for its success in the winter Olympics, though its summer program is very good and well-rounded as well; among individual Olympic sportts, swimming was the most notable hole in their results at the 2012 Olympics.
