Anika Apostalon Goes 21.86 to Take Top Seed in 50 Free Prelims on Day 2 of MWC Champs

Day 2 of the Women’s Mountain West Conference Championships kicked off today in San Antonio with the Boise State women looking to extend their lead on San Diego State and the rest of the field.  Here are your scores through day 1:

  1. Boise State 105
  2. San Diego State 98
  3. Nevada 82
  4. Wyoming 71
  5. Colorado State 68
  6. UNLV 60
  7. New Mexico 47
  8. Air Force 39
  9. Fresno State 38
  10. San Jose State 15

Genevieve Miller of Air Force is the top seed through the morning in the 500 free dropping roughly a second from her seed time coming in at 4:42. Breaking the championship record in the process. Look for Miller to have a run at the all-time Mountain West and Pool records this evening. Rounding out the top three is her teammate Sara Menke at 4:46.74 and Felicity Cann of Boise State at 4:47.93

Boise State IM specialist Samantha Wicks qualified 1st this morning at 1:58.44, her teammate Sydney Johansen will be joining her in the final.  Nevada looks to battle its way to the top spot with the trip Yawen Li, Teresa Baerens, and Arantxa Medina-Alegria all racing in the A final this evening.

Anika Apostalon of San Diego State torched the splash and dash field at the Palo Alto Aquatic Center this morning with a 21.86 and in the process punched her ticket for NCAAs. Apostalon will look to dip under her own Mountain West record this evening with teammates Bailey Aoyama and Taylor Johnson looking to pass Boise State and Nevada for the lead to end day 2. The Aztecs will need to take advantage of their sprint group to offset their absence of distance swimmers if they want to keep pace with the more balanced Broncos. Watch for San Diego State to possibly go for another Mountain West relay record in the 200 Freestyle relay to start off the finals session tonight at 6:30.

Note: Morgan Ginnis from New Mexico beat Emily Ridout from Wyoming in a swim-off for the final spot in the women’s 50 free A-Final.
