Swimming at the 2021 German National Championships, Anna Elendt broke her second national record of the week in the women’s 50 breaststroke with a 30.67. Elendt took the record from Dorothea Brandt and Kerstin Vogel who shared it times of 30.77 that they swam in 2014 and 2009, respectively.
Elendt’s previous best time was a 30.93 swum at the 2019 German National Championships.
Julia Titze swam a 31.43 for silver and Nele Schulze was a 31.74 for bronze.
Elendt previously set the German Record in the 100 breaststroke this week with a 1:06.50, becoming the first German woman to break 1:07 in the event. In May, she was one of 27 pool athletes named to the German roster for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Elendt trains in the United States at the University of Texas, where she has used one season of eligibility and qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Kathrin Demler delivered a gold medal performance in the women’s 200 IM, marking a 2:12.99 for the win. Behind her, Zoe Vogelmann and Kim Herkle were silver and bronze with a 2:13.05 and 2:13.94, respectively.
All 3 women improved upon their swims from a few weeks ago when they represented Germany at the recent 2021 European Championships. There, Demler swam a 2:13.49 in the semi-finals and a 2:13.38 in the prelims, Vogelmann a 2:14.39 in the semi-finals and a 2:14.23 in the prelims, and Herkle a 2:14.75 in the prelims.
A solid race broke out in the men’s 200 freestyle as Timo Sorgius and Henning Mühlleitner touched just 0.16 seconds apart. Sorgius opened things up with a 52.81 100 split to Mühlleitner’s 53.84 and while Mühlleitner came back quicker, Sorgius managed to hold him off and take the win. In the end, Sorgius hit a 1:48.75 for the gold medal as Mühlleitner notched a 1:48.91 for silver. Poul Zellmann rounded out the podium with a 1:49.21.
As one of the only 2020 Olympic qualifiers to race on day 3 of the German Nationals, Annika Bruhn raced to victory in the 200 freestyle with a 1:57.92. That’s quicker than her most recent Olympic performance back in 2016 when she posted a 1:58.48 for 20th overall. Bruhn has qualified this year to race the 200 free in Tokyo, along with the 100 free.
In the men’s 200 butterfly, Ramon Klenz swam a 1:57.87 to win gold which was slightly faster than his recent performance at 2021 Euros where he placed a 1:57.96 in the prelims and a 1:58.26 in the final. Klenz won the race by more than a second, beating out Daniel Pinneker‘s 1:59.33 and Yannick Plasil‘s 1:59.68.
Other wins on day 3 of German Nationals included Nina Kost‘s 2:11.84 in the women’s 200 backstroke, Yannis Merlin Willim‘s 2L12.73 in the men’s 200 breast, and Jessica Felsner‘s 25.01 in the women’s 50 free. There will be 1 final day of racing on Sunday, June 6th with prelims starting at 8:30 am local time and finals at 3 pm.
