American Annie Lazor crushed a new Pan Am Games Record in the final of the women’s 200 breaststroke on day three in Lima, putting up a time of 2:21.40 to chop almost three seconds off of the previous mark held by Kierra Smith.

Smith, a Canadian, set the old record at the 2015 Games in Toronto, where she swam a time of 2:24.38. Lazor, who will turn 25 in nine days, was actually the bronze medalist in that same race, clocking 2:26.23.

Lazor, an Auburn alum who currently trains in Indiana, set a personal best of 2:20.77 at the Bloomington Pro Series in May that stood as the fastest in the world at the time and remains in the #2 slot after the World Championships took place last month. Only Yuliya Efimova (2:20.17) has been faster this year.

Placing second in the race tonight was Lazor’s U.S. teammate Bethany Galat, who also went well under the previous record in a time of 2:21.84. That time puts her sixth in the world this year, and also falls just shy of her personal best (2:21.77) set at the 2017 World Championships where she won silver. Since the beginning of 2018, she hadn’t broken 2:23 until tonight.

This is Lazor’s second gold medal of the competition after winning the 100 breast on day one.
