Louisville swimmer Kelsi Worrell has broken through another historical barrier. After becoming the first woman under 50 seconds in the 100 yard butterfly on Friday morning, she began the Saturday evening session by becoming the first woman to ever split faster than 22 seconds in a 50 yard butterfly.
Worrell’s split registered at 21.96 on the third-leg of Louisville’s 200 yard medley relay. As compared to Thursday’s 400 medley relay, where she got slower between prelims and finals, on Friday she improved another tenth between sessions to break the all-time mark.
That gives her now the three-fastest butterfly splits in history. Besides this one, there was also her 22.07 in prelims, and a 22.34 from the ACC Championships.
Beryl Gastaldello’s 22.46 from SEC’s makes her the second-fastest swimmer ever.
To put a final point of context on it, there were 37 splits in Thursday night’s 200 free relay finals that weren’t faster than 22 seconds.
