Another Verbal for Stanford Men as Alberto Mestre Opts for The Farm

Sprinter Alberto Mestre has given his verbal pledge to the Stanford University men’s swimming and diving team for 2017-18.

“During my visit I realized that Stanford was the place of best fit for me. The academics, team, facilities, campus and coaching staff make Stanford unique. I am honored to become part of this team next year. Looking forward for what my future at Stanford holds.”

Mestre attends The Hill School and swims for Tiger Shark Swimming, both in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. He was runner-up in the 50m freestyle at 2016 Speedo Summer Junior Nationals this past August, dipping below the 23-second barrier for the first time with 22.95. His first sub-21 swim in a short-course pool came in a dual meet between The Hill School and Mercersburg Academy last December. Swimming against the 2015 Easterns champion, Ben Carter, Mestre exploded to a 20.97 and took down his own father’s 33-year-old Hill School record of 21.11 (the elder Mestre was a two-time Olympian, competing in 2000 and 2004 for Venezuela).

Mestre was runner-up in both the 50 free and 100 free at the 116th Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships last February. He achieved best times in both events. He also led off The Hill School’s fourth-place 200 free relay and sixth-place 400 free relay. His best times are:

  SCY LCM
50 free 20.55 22.95
100 free 45.10 51.52
200 free 1:43.96 1:55.68

Mestre adds his name to a list of Stanford 2021 commits that includes -so far- Brennan Pastorek, Glen Cowand, and Matthew Hirschberger.
