The Florida Gators pulled off an impressive 7th-in-a-row SEC title tonight after a hard fought battle with Mizzou. You might be asking yourself “how did Florida still manage to win despite losing an insanely impressive senior class to graduation last year?” Afterall, the Gators lost Caeleb Dressel, the greatest SCY sprinter of all time, as well as individual NCAA champions Jan Switkowski and Mark Szaranek, and sophomore Michael Taylor (a former Junior World Record holder) redshirted this season due to health issues.

Very impressive how they kept the streak alive but shouldn’t surprise anyone honestly. I’d be a little upset with how close they were with Mizzou considering they wouldn’t have even looked at most of Mizzou’s swimmers coming out of highschool. They recruit national team members and win Championships, no surprise.

Seems to me like this is a tough truth, despite the downvotes. Two of Florida’s freshman class are National Team members, and Kieran Smith wasn’t far off.

How many times has UF won these meets with guys that weren’t highly recruited out of high school though? They developed their reputation on being able to produce NCAA scoring-level talent out of foreign athletes with long course skills, and scrappy kids who were willing to do the work. Conor Dwyer hadn’t even been to NCAAs when he transferred from Iowa. His first year at UF, he was NCAA Swimmer of the Year and won two events there. Both schools have been shown to develop talent from the bottom up.

I think the argument is more that Mizzou HAS to develop talent, not that Florida can’t. But I agree that they’re both fantastic programs and I’m a big fan of Mizzou’s trajectory, even with their tumultuous coaching situation.

Congrats! Big win…wasn’t a slam dunk going in, especially with big graduations. Nice to keep the streak alive. Well done.
