Argentina National Championships Begin With National Record in 100 Breaststroke

The 2014 Argentine National Championships, jointly attended by Paraguay and Uruguay, began on Thursday, and they began with a bang in the form of a National Record in the 100 meter breaststroke.

Facundo Miguelena won the men’s 100 breaststroke in 1:01.42, improving the 1:02.35 set by Gabriel Morelli in January by almost a full second.

The 22-year old Miguelena had been stalled out, plateaued  with only small drops in the 1:03 range for the last three years. Now, though, he’s dropped way down, and could be a medalist at the South American Championships in the fall.

There was a little bit of an upset in a great race in the men’s 200 free. Federico Grabich qualified for the South American Championships with a 1:51.27, just out-touching Martin Naidich (1:52.00) and former Pan Ams medalist Ben Hockin of Paraguay (1:52.36).
