Bahamian swimmer Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace scratched the 100m butterfly final after taking the sixth seed in prelims this morning.
Not only did Vanderpool-Wallace get a spot in finals this morning, but she set a new personal best and broke her own national record in the event.
Lowering four-tenths of a second off the record, Vanderpool-Wallace clocked in at 59.33 to re-set the mark. That’s the fastest she’s been since 2010 when she set the 59.74 record at the 2010 and Central American and Caribbean Games.
Vanderpool-Wallace’s scratch bumped up Marie Laura Meza into the final. Meza was a 1:01.01 this morning and will be swimming out of lane eight tonight.
The scratch had a ripple effect as Sharon Bravo of Ecuador was bumped into the consolation final. She was a 1:03.67 this morning and will have have to dip below a 1:02.37 if she wants to break the Ecuadorian national record tonight.
The only other scratch of the evening came in the men’s 100m butterfly where 13th seed Dylan Carter decided not to swim. The USC swimmer who represents Trinidad and Tobago internationally was a 53.89 in prelims.
With his scratch, Aldo Castillo Sulca of Bolivia will get a chance to swim in the consolation final. Castillo Sulca is by far the slowest of the group. He was a 57.25 this morning, almost two seconds slower than anyone else who will be in the ‘B’ final.
