Arizona Kicks off Weekend with Win Over UCLA

Arizona kicked off a weekend of Pac-12 battles in a home dual meet against UCLA on Friday. The Wildcats outlasted the Bruins in a close battle, winning by 9 points.

Hannah Cox remains undefeated in the distance races for the Wildcats, sweeping titles in the 500 free and 1000 free against the Bruins. In the 1000 free, Cox was the only swimmer to break the 10-minute mark, commanding the race in 9:57.39. She was equally dominant in the 500 free, putting up the only sub-5:00 swim to win by 8 seconds in 4:52.17.

Arizona’s Mallory Korenwinder stayed perfect in the 100 breast this season. She took the early lead with a 29.55 split at the 50-yard mark, extending her lead to win by almost 2 seconds in 1:02.68. Korenwinder finished 2nd in the 200 breast later on with a 2:19.12.

UCLA’s Katie Grover was the top individual performer of the meet, sweeping her 3 events. Grover swept the sprint freestyles, posting times of 23.35 in the 50 free and 50.19 in the 100 free. She finished off the triple in the 100 fly, coming from behind by outsplitting Arizona’s Mackenzie Rumrill by a second on the back half. Grover touched in 54.40 for the win, followed by Rumrill in 54.59.

Kenisha Liu and Emma Schanz both doubled up for UCLA. Liu took control of the 200 free early on and extended her lead throughout the race with a 1:48.09. She then took on Cox (2:02.61) in the 200 IM, coming up big on the back half to overcome Cox’s near 3-second early lead and take the win in 2:02.20. Schanz picked up her wins in the 100 back and 200 breast. In the 100 back, she used her front half speed to take the edge over Arizona’s Cameron McHugh, winning 55.35 to 55.48. She was dominant in the 200 breast, winning by over 2 seconds in 2:16.71.

PRESS RELEASE – ARIZONA:

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona women’s swimming and diving defeated UCLA 154.5-145.5 on Friday afternoon at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The women are now 3-0 in Augie Busch‘s first season as the Wildcats head coach.

Hannah Cox continued her hot start to the 2017-18 season with two more victories in the 1,000 free and 500 free. She remains undefeated in those two events in dual meets this season.

Mallory Korenwinder earned her third victory in the 100 breast in three tries this season. She finished today with a season-best 1:02.68. Mik Ranslem won her second-consecutive 200 fly and Cameron McHugh took first in the 200 back for the third-straight time.

Arizona opened the meet by taking first in the 200 medley relay. Arizona’s A team of Katrina Konopka, Korenwinder, Mackenzie Rumrill, and Morgan Ginnis touched first at 1:41.32.

Cox breezed into first place in the 1,000 free for the third time this season with 9:57.39. She also won the 500 free with 4:52.17 for the third time as well. Cox placed second in the 200 IM with 2:02.61.

Korenwinder won the 100 breast with 1:02.68 and finished second in the 200 breast with 2:19.12.

Ranslem won the 200 fly with 2:00.01.

Arizona’s Ginnis placed second in the 50 free (23.40), while Ashley Sutherland and Zohar Shikler tied for third (23.46).

McHugh finished first in the 200 back (1:57.73) and third in the 100 back (55.51) and 200 IM (2:04.67).

Jamie Stone placed second in the 200 free with 1:49.76. She finished third in the 100 free with 50.54 and 100 fly with 55.19.

Rumrill finished second in the 100 breast with 1:04.44 and 100 fly with 54.59.

Arizona’s 200 free relay teams swept the Bruins to close out the meet and secure the win. The B team came in first with 1:31.73 and the A team finished second with 1:32.78.

Delaney Schnell finished third for both the one- and three-meter dives with 224.40 and 239.03, respectively.

Up Next: Arizona men’s and women’s swimming and diving will be back tomorrow, November 4, to host the USC Trojans at 12 pm (noon) MST.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The UCLA swimming and diving team dropped its first Pac-12 meet on the road Friday, falling 154.5-145.5 to Arizona at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The Wildcats finished 1-2 in the 200 Free Relay to secure the victory.

Katie Grover won three individual events for the Bruins on the afternoon, while Kenisha Liu and Emma Schanz each picked up two of her own. Eloise Belanger swept both diving events.

The Wildcats picked up the first win of the day in the 200 Medley Relay, as their “A” team clocked in at 1:41.32. The Bruin “A” and “B” teams finished second and third, respectively, to put them squarely on the board. Arizona would continue its winning ways into the individual events, taking the top two spots in the 1000 Free, with Hannah Cox continuing her hot start to the season. Sandra Soe finished third, while Lisa Kaunitz posted a fifth-place finish to notch a point for the Bruins.

Kenisha Liu picked up the first UCLA victory of the day, checking in with a time of 1:48.09 in the 200 Free. Wildcats held the 2-3-4 spots, while Carly Reid finished fifth. Schanz would continue the Bruin momentum, taking the 100 Back in a time of 55.35, just ahead of Kattrina Konopka of Arizona (55.48). Freshmen Jennifer Lathrop and Lucy Agnew also registered 2.5 points for the Bruins.

Sarah Kaunitz (1:04.51) and Emma Cain (1:04.96) picked up third- and fourth-place finishes in the 100 Breast, but Wildcat Mallory Korenwinder finished nearly two seconds ahead (1:02.68) to secure another first-place spot for the home team. Arizona’s Mikayla Ranslem, meanwhile, took the 200 Fly (2:00.01), as Bruins Amy Okada (2:01.61), Marie-Pierre Delisle (2:03.41) and Allison Goldblatt (2:04.76) accounted for points.

Grover posted her first win of the meet with a 23.35 in the 50 Free. Wildcats took 2-3-4, while Isabella Goldsmith picked up another UCLA point. Grover added another one race later, finishing the 100 Free in a time of 50.19, just ahead of Liu (50.42).

Agnew’s 2:02.17 in the 200 Back was good for third, just ahead of teammate Lathrop (2:02.77). Delisle finished fifth with a time of 2:05.04. Cameron McHugh (1:57.73) won the event for the Wildcats.

Schanz would pick up her second win of the day in the 200 Breast, which she took with a time of 2:16.71. Cain (2:21.06) and Sarah Kaunitz (2:22.16) finished third and fourth.

Cox took her second distance event of the day in the 500 Free with a time of 4:52.17, while Soe took second in 5:00.54. Lisa Kaunitz‘s 5:04.23 made for a fifth-place spot and a point for the Bruins.

Grover’s third win came in the 100 Fly (54.40), while Liu’s came one race later in the 200 IM (2:02.20). Okada and Schanz earned points in each respective race.

Arizona would close the afternoon with a first- and second-place results in the 200 Free Relay to secure the victory, while the Bruin “A” team finished third with a time of 1:35.81, just over four seconds back of the top spot.

Bruins controlled the diving competition, with Belanger registering her second consecutive sweep of the Wildcats. The junior posted a score of 314.78 in the 3-Meter competition, while Ciara Monahan (278.63) finished second and Madeline Russell (220.80) picked up a fourth-place score.

Belanger would also take the 1-Meter with a score of 298.73. Monahan would again pick up a runner-up finish (250.43), while Traci Shiver‘s 209.63 would count for a foiurth-place results and two more points.
