Arizona Scores Verbal From Backstroke Ace Connor West for 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Current high school junior Connor West has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Arizona. West is from Castle Rock, Colorado, where he swims for the Denver Swim Academy and attends Highlands Ranch High School.

A talented backstroker, some of West’s best races are in the long course pool. He was a 2019 Winter US Open qualifier in the 100 back. His time of 58.56, swum leading off the 400 medley relay at the 2019 Zone Championships-Fresno, slid just .06 under the qualifying standard. He also held the 18 and under bonus standard in the 200 back.

Last May, while still only a sophomore in high school, West was a two event finalist at the Colorado High School 5A Boys State Championships. He swam to an 11th place finish in the 100 back (51.30) and a 10th place finish in the 200 IM (1:57.50).

Best SCY Times

  • 100 back – 50.45
  • 200 back – 1:48.74
  • 200 IM – 1:55.36
  • 100 free – 48.10
  • 200 free – 1:46.23

The Wildcats finished 2nd at the 2020 Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships. This marks the highest finish for the team since 1996. While Cal built a strong lead, the margin between 2nd and 4th was much slimmer. Only 11 points separated Arizona from 4th place Arizona State.

This season Arizona’s top backstroker, senior Thomas Anderson, took 4th and 5th in the 100 and 200 backstrokes at Pac-12’s. While Anderson will have graduated, West will have one year of overlap with fellow Colorado native and current sophomore, Ty Coen. Coen was a B-finalist in the 100 back.

At the 2020 Pac-12 Championships it took a 49.24/1:46.59 to qualify for the B-final.

West won’t be the only member of the team joining from Colorado in 2021. He will be joined by fellow Colorado junior Alex McMahon, who committed to join the Wildcats earlier this year.
