Arizona State Gets Verbal for Class of 2022 from Dayton Raiders’ Cody Bybee

“So excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my education and swimming career at Arizona state University! “

Cody Bybee, a junior at Bellbrook High School in Bellbrook, Ohio, has given a verbal commitment to Arizona State University for the 2018-19 season. Bybee is a four-time Ohio state high school champion, having won both the 200 free and 100 fly in his sophomore and junior years.

Bybee swims for Dayton Raiders during the club season and has developed into an incredibly versatile athlete. He was an A-finalist in the 100/200y freestyles and 100y fly at Winter Juniors East last December, and also scored in the 50/500y free, 100 back, and 200 fly. In long course meters last summer, Bybee was top-3 in the 100/200m free and 100m fly and top-16 in the 50m free and 100m back. He is also a very effective relay swimmer. His best SCY times are:

  • 50 free – 20.36
  • 100 free – 43.78
  • 200 free – 1:34.55
  • 500 free – 4:23.58
  • 50 fly – 21.57
  • 100 fly – 46.97
  • 200 fly – 1:47.66
  • 50 back – 23.91
  • 100 back – 49.42
  • 200 back – 1:49.42

Bob Bowman’s Sun Devils are on the rise. They placed fourth at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, their best finish ever, and 14th at NCAAs. Bybee, with another year of high school to go, would already have been the third-fastest leg on their 800 free relay at NCAAs. He also would have had an impact at Pac-12s, with times that would have scored in the 100 free (C final), 200 free (A final), 500 free (B final), and 100 fly (B final). His versatility across events and distances is what makes Bybee a key recruit for the Sun Devils, a team that is graduating a third of its roster this spring.

Wow. Gotta hand it to Bowman and Phelps. He’s pulling recruits that would have selected other PAC-12 schools in years’ past. Cameron Craig likely would have been Arizona or Cal 5 years ago. Grant House was likely a Stanford shoe in 5 years ago. Now Bybee? Stanford had a lot of ties to Ohio so I would have picked Stanford for him as well. Good for them. I hope this pushes all the PAC-12 schools to up their recruiting game bc this is definitely a game-changer.

Congratulations to Cody and to ASU. They just landed a top 10 recruit from 2018. And as for any criticism on Cody’s choice… It’s Bob Bowman. Great athlete and class act.

Bob Bowman definitely has a “type”… Cameron Craig, Grant House, Cody Bybee…
no sprinters, no distance swimmers, no breaststrokers – just versatile mid-distance swimmers who will crush 3 strokes on demand.

SwimSwam should really allow users to have accounts and permanently claim usernames.
