Arizona Wildcats Top Final 2009-2010 CSCAA Poll

The  Collegiate Swim Coaches Association (CSCAA) has released their final men’s dual meet poll for the 2009-2010 season. The final women’s poll was released a few weeks ago.

The top two teams, Arizona and Texas, faced off in a dual meet since the last poll, which Arizona won 281-271. Despite this loss, the Longhorns garnered four first place votes over Arizona, and was only six total votes behind.

Stanford, despite the loss of NCAA All-American, and defending NCAA 100-fly champion Austin Staab, only dropped one spot to third, followed by their big rival the California Golden Bears. This gave the Pac-10 three out of the top four teams in the poll.

Florida finished fifth, and earned the final two first place votes, ahead of conference rival Auburn at no. 6. This ranking is interesting since Auburn won the SEC Conference Championship ahead of Florida, however this is a dual meet poll.

Michigan clocked in as the top Big Ten squad in the final poll, after completing a perfect 7-0 dual meet season, including a win over Big Ten Conference Meet Champion Ohio State. The ACC-Champion Virginia Caveliers were ranked 8th, and the Buckeyes were tied for 9th with Georgia.

The increased visibility of the dual meet poll this season has brought a lot of increased visibility for college dual meets, whereas in the past they had been simply viewed by many fans as incidental stepping stones headed into Championship season. The Pac-10 teams were the big winners, this season, as they had 3 out of the top 5 teams in both the men’s and women’s polls for most of the season.

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, Inc. (CSCAA), is the oldest coaches association in the United States of America.
