Day 1 Recap

Fayetteville, Ark. – Arkansas Swimming and Diving collectively put up 13 personal-best times and broke two pool records at Friday’s meet against Kansas. Razorback diver Malea Martinez led the way with a personal-best in the one-meter and three-meter event while swimmers Bella Cothern, Andrea Sansores, Alessia Ferraguti, and Kobie Melton broke the school record in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay, respectively.

Head Coach Neil Harper: “Today was a great way to get our senior recognition weekend started. I have to say that our freshmen stepped up with wins from Sydney (1650 Free), Maddy (200 Free), Delaney (200 Fly), Malea (1m and 3m Diving), and Betsy (100 Free). It was fun for all of us to watch. Two pool records in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay were very exciting, and Luciana’s great win in the 400 IM in a probable NCAA qualifying time. We are now set up with many confident performances going into our senior meet tomorrow versus Kansas.”

Diving Coach Abel Sanchez: “Today was a fantastic day, I was proud of our divers. Malea killed it, and all the ladies did really well. They have been training hard and we are getting ready for SEC’s. They are right where they need to be and hats off to all our divers. Tomorrow’s going to be a great day.”

We are thankful for their contributions to our program from those that have been here one and two short years, those that have been here four, and our super seniors that have been great Razorbacks for five years. We know we will miss them next year but are excited for what they will do at the SEC and NCAA Championships in the next couple of months.”

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kansas fell to Arkansas by a score of 181-112 on Saturday at Arkansas Natatorium. The swimmers competed in 14 events while the divers competed in the platform dive.

Next, sophomore Addi Barnes raced to a time of 10:32.60 in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing third.

In the 200 freestyle, junior Claudia Dougan placed third with a time of 1:52.88. Sisung swam to a second-place finish with a time of 56.10. Dougan finished in third place for a second time, racing to a time of 51.62 in the 100 free.

The Jayhawks took second and third in the 500 freestyle, with Barnes racing to a time of 5:05.71 and a second place finish. Freshman Hailey Farrell placed third with a time of 5:08.01.

“I thought today had a little bit of a different feel to it because it was a morning meet instead of an evening meet. We have to get used to that for conference championships. We are still transitioning to a faster pace work in practice, so it’s going to take a little bit of time for them to see the results. About half of the team saw the results they wanted, but we still have a few weeks before Big 12’s. We will keep sawing wood and getting faster every day.”

Head Coach Clark Campbell

Kansas took second place in the last three events of the meet. Looney placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.14, followed by Lafferty placing third. In the 200 individual medley, Gwidt placed second and Wehrmann placed third. In the last event of the meet, the relay team of Dougan, Looney, Dewi Blose and Maggie Moore led the way for Kansas, placing second with a time of 3:30.31.

On the diving end, freshman Lize van Leeuwen finished in third, scoring 205.55. Junior Lauren Gryboski followed, placing fourth with a score 194.05. “The divers had a really successful trip to Arkansas,” diving coach Stephanie O’Callaghan said. “It’s been a busy three weeks of travel and meets and they’ve done a great job of staying focused and progressing. It’s always helpful to push ourselves outside our comfort zone and this environment was perfect for that. Everything we’ve done as a team this year has been focused on helping us learn and prepare for this great, new challenge in the American. We’re excited to finish out at home next week then focus on conference.”

The divers will return home on Jan. 28 against Iowa State at 1 p.m. in Denton.
