MEN: The Army West Point men’s swimming and diving team opened up its 2017-18 home slate with a convincing 193.5-105.5 victory over UMass on Friday night at Crandall Pool.

ARMY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

  • Army took 14 of the 16 events, one more than the Black Knights took in last year’s dual meet with UMass.
  • The Cadets picked up their 10th win all-time against the Minutemen.
  • Evin Rude placed first in the 100 (45.86) and 200 (1:40.06) free.
  • Kevin Doo took the top spot in the 100 (48.77) and 200 (1:52.34) fly.
  • In the diving well, Hudson Kay came out on top in the one-meter (275.70) and in the three-meter (295.05).

WENDER’S WORDS

  • “I was really proud of our team today,” head coach Mickey Wender said. “It was a great way to start the season and we put together a focused, dominant performance. We executed well and took races out aggressively. Most importantly, we were tough down the stretch and won most of the close events. This sets us up well to go on the road to prepare for our mid-season peak in about 55 days.”

WOMEN: The Army West Point women’s swimming and diving team started off the home portion of its 2017-18 season with a 195-103 victory over UMass on Friday night at Crandall Pool.

ARMY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Black Knights claimed 12 of the 16 events.
  • Army defeated the Minutemen for the third consecutive season.
  • The Cadets picked up their fourth win all-time against the Minutemen.
  • Monica Sowinski placed first in the 100 (53.03) and 200 (1:54.27) free, while also taking second in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.26.
  • Jenna Forrester and Bailey Smith tied for first in the 50 free after finishing at 24.37.
  • Smith would go on to also place first in the 200 backstroke at 2:04.27.

MEN: University of Massachusetts men’s swimming and diving fell to Army 193.5-105.5 at Crandall Pool on Friday evening. The Minutemen won two individual events and picked up 10 runner-up finishes, including two in relay events.

The relay teams opened the night with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:34.70 before going on to take the second through fifth spots in the 400 Free highlighted by a time of 3:11.02 posted by Owen WrightRyan PedrickKyle Stefanides and Kellen Gray.

Wright provided one of the first-place individual finishes with a swim of 20.85 in the 50 Free while Ryan Pedrickcame in tied for second with a time of 21.45. Wright and Pedrick went on to finish second and fourth in the 100 Free later in the meet.

Chris DiGiacomo set the pace with a winning swim of 1:52.15 in the 200 Back while Oliver Wyeth and Jason Tovarcame in third and fifth to pick up 13 points for the Minutemen. DiGiacomo also posted a runner-up finish in the 200 Free with Wyeth finishing fifth before helping lead the way for UMass in two other events.

DiGiacomo finished with the top time for UMass with a second-place finish in the 200 IM, an event that the Minutemen grabbed four top-five finishes with Trzewik-Quinn in third and Connar Patterson and Anthony Rizzo in fourth and fifth.

Trzewik-Quinn finished as the runner-up in the 100 Free as UMass once again placed multiple swimmers in the top-five of the field as Kyle Stefaindes and Kellen Gray closed out the top-five with fourth and fifth place finishes.

Harry Ortof and Chase Kent finished towards the top of the field in the distance swims as Ortof finished second in the 1000 Free with a swim of 9:48.23 with Kent finishing just behind him with a time of 9:48.34. Kent went on to finish one spot ahead of Ortof in the 500 Free with a time of 4:46.20.

In the diving competition, Trent Kindvall came in second in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives, recording a score of 274.35 in the 1-Meter. Kindvall was also the runner-up in the 3-Meter dive while Reece Donahue took fourth in both events.

The Minutemen will come home to Rogers Pool for their first home meet of the season as they are set to take on NJIT on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.

WOMEN: University of Massachusetts women’s swimming and diving team swept the top-two spots in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives as they fell to Army on the road at Crandall Pool 195-103 on Friday evening.

Emma Roush took the top spot in both diving events, posting the top scores of 262.35 in the 1-Meter dive and 262.13 in the 3-Meter Dive. Kaite Polk came in second in the 1-Meter with a score of 250.12 while teammate Maja Boric finished third before taking the runner-up spot in the 3-Meter Dive with a score of 251.77.

Kelly Malyszka set the pace in the first individual race of the night, the 1000 Free, finishing with a top time of 10:24.53 with Steph Campo finishing fourth. Malyszka went on to win another distance swim later in the evening with a time of 5:06.52 in the 500 Free while fellow Minutewomen Olga Egkorova took fourth to pick up 11 of the 19 points in the race. The freshman put together another solid performance in the 200 Free with a runner-up swim of 1:54.35.

Ansley Baker added a runner-up finish and two third-place finishes as she finished second in the 100 Free with a swim of 53.08. Baker also took third in both the 50 Free with a time of 24.53 and the 100 Breaststroke.

UMass finished the night by taking second through fourth in the 400 Free Relay as Maddie BironSydnee Aubin, Malyszka and Paige Mitchell posted the runner-up swim of 3:40.81.

The Minutewomen will come home to Rogers Pool for their first home meet of the season as they are set to take on Vermont on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
