Army West Point Nabs Trio of Quintana, Dang and Kang

The Army West Point Black Knights have earned three verbal commitments recently, including two teammates from Arizona Gold and Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona: Larry Quintana and Ty Dang. The third is Edward Kang of Lake Oswego, Oregon. All three will be solid additions to the Black Knights’ lineup, and should be able to make an impact right away.

Larry Quintana

Larry Quintana is a Summer Juniors qualifier in the 200 breast and a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 100 breast. He also swims IM, free, and back.

“Before moving to Arizona in second grade, I was born and raised in New York an hour away from the West Point campus and used to visit there as a kid so I always had a connection to the Academy. Aside from the accomplishing swim program, I chose West Point to grow as a leader and to be educated in the characteristics to be a leader. The Academy is the best place on earth to become the best version of yourself and to follow in the footsteps of great names such as Robert E. Lee, Douglas MacArthur, and Dwight D Eisenhower to name a few. –Larry Quintana

Quintana’s top times are:

  SCY LCM
100 breast 57.54 1:06.53
200 breast 2:04.42 2:23.10
200 IM 1:58.59 2:20.42
400 IM 4:20.13 4:50.63

At the 2014 Arizona High School Division I State Meet, Quintana swam the 200 IM and 100 breast, finishing 7th in the latter. His current times put him just outside scoring range for Patriot League (which only scores two finals) but Army has strong breaststrokers which will make a good training group for Quintana.

Ty Dang

Quintana’s teammate at both Hamilton High School and Arizona Gold, Ty Dang, is also a national-level breaststroker and IMer, but he adds the gamut of backstroke distances to his list of events. Third in the 100 breast and seventh in the 200 IM at the 2014 Arizona High School Division I State Meet, Dang can go in a number of directions for Army West Point.

Dang’s top events include:

  SCY LCM
100 breast 56.42 1:05.41
200 breast 2:02.40 2:19.24
200 IM 1:53.09 2:09.68
400 IM 4:02.66 4:40.83
50 back 24.93 29.43
100 back 52.47 1:01.12
200 back 1:51.77 2:08.81

Dang’s best times in the 100/200 breast and 200/400 IM would all have made “B” finals at 2015 Patriot League Championships, while his 100/200 back would not have been too far off the mark.

Edward Kang

Edward Kang, a senior at Lake Oswego High School who also swims at Lake Oswego Swim Club, specializes in events that are complementary to those of the two Arizonans: fly and back. Kang won the 100 fly at the 2015 OSAA 6A Swimming State Championships in 50.25 and was third in the 100 back with 52.00. He also led off Lake Oswego’s medley relay (24.73) and anchored the 400 free relay (47.34). Kang’s best times are:

  SCY LCM
100 fly 50.21 57.82
200 fly 1:49.85 2:08.21
100 back 51.68
200 back 1:52.37 2:14.12

Kang’s top 200 fly time would have qualified him for the “A” final at 2015 Patriot League Championships; his 100 fly would have made the “B” cutoff, and his 100 back would have been on the “B” bubble.
