The results were compiled using USA Swimming results of top ranked swimmers in the 10&U and 11-12 age groups for the 2021 Long Course season and 2021-22 Short Course season. Swimmers were scored for 1st through 20th place in individual events only; relays not included. Following are the 2022 Top 100 Age Group Teams:

It truly takes 1 special kid to make this list… this doesn’t define an age group program whatsoever.
Agreed! And I’d love to see the data from this. USASwimming database is filled with 10 year olds times that equate to national age group records or where the kid’s 100 time is faster than their 50. Should be limited to 4 events per swimmer and separate the 11&12 year age groups. Should also be limited to certain events. Scoring should be more transparent.

ASCA is comparing apples to oranges. For this honor, how does a team with one location compete against a team with multiple locations? The odds of having more than one “1 in a 100” swimmers on your team goes up if your “team” has 7 locations with ~1000 swimmers.
its broken the same way the vcc is broken. large teams will always trump the smaller programs. however, there are seemingly many small, one-site programs on this list…. congratulations to their success.
If it was that unfair than NCAP and Tac titans would be one and two.
Why would they be 1 and 2, do they have huge 12 and under programs?
Not necessarily saying it’s unfair just seems this variable is not accounted for… maybe it is – maybe it isn’t
A list of those teams that ‘punch above their weight’ sounds interesting.
I’ve always been interested in this, but philosophically I struggle with how to build the criteria in a way that’s not self-defeating. Small teams that are doing really well almost always grow, right? So it’s almost as if you’re looking for the best team with a coach who can coach really well, but who is either located in an area without that growth potential for whatever reason, or a club that doesn’t have the ambition to grow. So you’re kind of narrowing that subset even further.
It’s an interesting thought experiment, though. I’d love to hear how you might scope it beyond just “number of registered swimmers.”
Maybe factor in number of coaches per team. That’s all available via usaswimming. Larger teams with more sites have more coaches, so that factors in the size part.
There is no method that will work because the entire premise is wrong. I would love to see the criteria tho.
This can have very little to do with coaching and a lot to do with a large pool of kids to draw from. The fact that ASCA celebrates it as purely a “coaching achievement” is a bit disingenuous.
I am sure there are a few highly coachable 10 year olds out there… somewhere, but it’s more likely that one or two above average swimmers (fast growers, quick learners) got these teams on this list and if you have multiple locations you are drawing from a larger pool of children and of course you will get more of that early… Read more »
