14-year-old Athena Meneses Kovacs, who won’t be 15 until the very end of December, lowered her own Mexican National Age Group Record in the 50-meter butterfly on Friday night in Budapest. Swimming in the final at 2019 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, Meneses Kovacs went 26.74 to take another .03 off the national mark of 26.97 she had established in the semi-finals on Thursday night. Earlier Thursday she had been the ninth-fastest out of heats with 27.07, which was at the time a personal-best by .16.

Meneses Kovacs lives in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and trains with Eagle Aquatics. She is one of only two 14-and-under girls in the United States to have broken the 27-second barrier in the 50m fly; the other one is Claire Curzan (26.18). Curzan was the bronze medalist in the 50m fly final on Friday night in Budapest with 25.81.

Meneses Kovacs has moved into the top 15 in the world for 18-and-under girls in the 50m fly. She ranks 13th, tied with Japan’s Mayuka Yamamoto for 2019.

Some information in this article’s wrong. Meneses has broken today her own absolute Mexican record in 50 fly, which she set yesterday in the semifinals in 26.78. The 26.97 was the old Mexican record from Lili Ibáñez.
