Friday night marked day 1 finals of the 2020 Auburn Invite, where swimmers competed individually in the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free. Auburn’s Camille Porter made a huge drop in the 50 free, winning in 22.33. Before today, she had never broken 23 seconds. Teammate Sierra Jett was just 5 hundredths shy of her best, taking 2nd in 22.89. After swimming his lifetime best 20.18 in prelims, FSU’s Gavin Jones won the men’s final in 20.24, a nail ahead of Florida’s Viktor Toth (20.36).
Florida State’s Hailey Ladd was the first winner of the session, posting a 4:53.30 in the 500 free. That’s her fastest time since the 2018 version of this invite, where she put up her lifetime best 4:52.79. Florida’s Alfonso Mestre was within a second of his lifetime best from midseason in the men’s version of that race. He won with a 4:21.96.
LSU freshman Maddie Clifton blew away her lifetime best in the 200 IM. Her 2:00.77 was a best by over 2 seconds. The men’s 200 IM was also won by a freshman. Balazs Berecz, who made his debut for FSU last month, won the race in 1:47.29.
