Australian Women Break Junior World Record En Route To Relay Gold

The Australian women managed to win a tough battle with the Canadian women in the 4x200m freestyle relay in order to take gold and better the previous world junior record in the event.

With a time of 7:56.68, the Australians took a huge chunk of the previous record of 7:59.42 set by the Americans at the 2013 Junior World Championships.

In start-to-finish fashion the Australians won the race much due to a great leadoff split done by Tamsin Cook. Cook opened up the race with a 1:58.18 split which is faster than Brittany MacLean’s individual 200m freestyle championship record of 1:58.93.

Lucy McJannett followed Cook’s lead with a 1:59.68. Shayna Jack entered the water after her and split a 1:59.76. Gemma Cooney was a 1:59.08 in order to secure the win and touch in for gold ahead of the Canadians.

The big reason why the Canadians were in the race was due to a monster split by up and coming swim-star Taylor Ruck. Ruck, who trains in the United States, split a 1:56.71 to anchor the Canadians. She was the only swimmer under 1:58.00 during the final and with her split locked in a silver for Canada with a combined time of 7:57.04

Ruck’s split pushed the Canadians past both the Russians and Americans who finished third and fourth respectively. Both countries were also under the previous junior world record with times of 7:57.58 and 7:57.84.
