Top 5 Biggest Time Drops From Seed On Day 4 Of U.S. Nationals

The 100-meter races were host to tonight’s biggest time drops, with all five of our biggest drops coming from the 100 back and 100 breast. Isabel Ivey had the day’s biggest drop, moving from 1:03 to 1:01 in the 100 back. Bethany Galat (pictured) had the biggest drop among top-16 seeds.

Top 5 Biggest Time Drops From Seed On Day 3 Of U.S. Nationals

Today, three of the five biggest drops came from highly-seeded athletes. In fact, Leah Smith’s explosive 400 IM was the biggest drop of the day for any swimmer, and she started with the 8th seed. Smith wound up winning the national title and escaping the DQ onslaught.

While she wasn’t the distance freestyler many expected to make a crossover into IM, it was Leah Smith (not Katie Ledecky) who won the national 400 IM title tonight in a shocker, and it’s Smith, not Ledecky, who leads all point-getters at Nationals three days in.

Return of the Lochte Rule: Abrahm Devine DQ’d At US Nats

As it did last summer, the so-called ‘Lochte Rule’ prohibiting IMers from underwater kicking on their backs outside of the backstroke leg has cropped up at the biggest American selection meet. This morning the rule nabbed Stanford’s Abrahm Devine, who was disqualified after posing a 4:17.55 that would have placed him fourth heading into the final.
