North Central College athletic director Jim Miller ’86 has announced the hiring of Averi Lewis as the new head coach of the Cardinals’ women’s triathlon and swimming & diving programs.
“Averi brings an impressive approach to coaching the two sports. We believe her education and experience coaching swimmers and triathletes of various ages, abilities, and motivations will support the goals and aspirations of our own North Central College student-athletes,” said Miller.
Lewis comes to North Central with nearly 10 years of coaching and leadership experience. In her most recent roles, she was the head age group & masters swim coach at the Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club as well as a triathlon coach with Matt Hanson Racing.
She will be graduating with her master’s of science in sports psychology from Florida State University in May. While having earned her bachelor’s degrees in both psychology and exercise science at the University of Alabama, Lewis was also a member and vice president of the club triathlon team for the Crimson Tide.
She looks forward to having the opportunity to work with both the triathlon and swimming & diving programs at North Central.
“Ever since women’s triathlon became an emerging NCAA sport, I have had aspirations of coaching collegiate triathlon, said Lewis. “Because my athletic and coaching career first began in swimming, I was immediately drawn to this role that would allow me to coach both sports I am so passionate about.”
“When visiting the North Central campus for the first time, I quickly sensed how close-knit the community is here. The athletics staff and athletes were so welcoming, and I really felt like my coaching philosophy meshed with their goals for the swim and triathlon programs,” Lewis said.
The Cardinals have won three NCAA Division III Triathlon National Championships in addition to having four individual national champions since the program began in 2016.
“I feel very privileged to join the ranks of coaches who are helping to shape the future of triathlon as a collegiate sport in its initial stage. I cannot wait to see how this sport will continue to grow in the coming years, and I hope my work will help North Central to continue to set the standard for competitive excellence in Division III triathlon.”
North Central will open its sixth season of women’s triathlon in September while women’s swimming will begin in October.
Congratulations and good luck, Averi!
