Backstroke Specialist Sam Reiger Commits to the University of Indianapolis

Sam Reiger of Fort Mill, SC has announced his decision to swim at the University of Indianapolis beginning in the 2021-2022 season. He is a senior at Nation Ford High School and he swims club at Aquatic Team of Mecklenberg.

In October, Reiger competed at the South Carolina High School 5A State Championships. He swam the 100 back, 100 fly, and two relays for Ford Nation High School. His 100 back time of 53.39, while his 100 fly time of 53.29 placed him 8th. Reiger anchored his team’s 400 free relay, which earned the silver medal. Austin Lockhart, Lucas Grigat, and George Bujoreanu swam the first three legs of the relay. Finally, Reiger swam the butterfly leg of Nation Ford’s 200 medley relay. Bujoreanu led off on backstroke, Grigat swam breast, and Lockhart anchored. The men took the gold medal in the event, coming from behind JI Mann High School to win the race in the final 50.

Reiger most recently swam at the North Carolina Senior Championships. He swam the 50 free, 100 and 200 back, 100 fly, and 200 IM. He made it back into the C-final in the 50 free and the 200 back, finishing 17th in both in finals. He was 30th in the 200 IM and 7th in the timed finals of the 100 fly. He placed in the A-final of the 100 back, ultimately touching 6th. He ended the meet with 5 personal best times and a Futures cut in the 100 back.

  • 100 back – 51.45
  • 200 back – 1:53.64
  • 100 fly – 51.50
  • 50 free – 21.74

Reiger will become of member of UIndy’s men’s team beginning in the fall of 2021. His top times would have placed him in the C-final of the 100 and 200 back at the 2020 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. The University of Indianapolis’ men’s team won the conference title, outscoring McKendree University by 38 points. It was their third consecutive conference title. The men’s team sent 15 swimmers and divers to the NCAA DII Championships, where they placed 6th overall.
