Backstroker and IMer Ryan Slonac Commits to Minnesota

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ryan Slonac, a senior at Muskego High School in Wisconsin, has committed to the University of Minnesota.

I’m excited to announce my commitment to the University of Minnesota!! I chose Minnesota because of their amazing athletic and academic facilities. Go Gophers”

Slonac has Summer Juniors cuts in the SCY 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. He has a Winter Juniors cut in the LCM 100 fly, and Futures cuts in the SCY 100 fly, 50 free, and 100 free.

At his senior Wisconsin state championships, Slonac finished 2nd in the 100 back and 200 IM. This is a significant improvement over his junior year, where he finished 5th in the 100 back and 4th in the 200 IM.

Slonac also competes for the Waukesha Express Swim Team. At the 2023 NCSA Spring Swimming Championships, he finished 10th in the 200 IM. He was also a four-time champion at the 2022 Wisconsin Long Course Championships, in the 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM.

Best short-course yards times:

  • 100 back: 48.73
  • 200 back: 1:46.42
  • 100 fly: 50.57
  • 200 IM: 1:48.06

Minnesota is a member of the Big Ten Conference. At the 2023 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Minnesota finished 5th out of 8 teams. The team finished 21st overall at the NCAA Men’s Championships.

At the 2023 Big Ten Championships and with his best times, Slonac would’ve made the C finals in the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. Slonac will have the chance to swim with Casey Stowe, a rising senior, and Alberto Hernandez Garcia, a rising sophomore, both of whom are top backstrokers. Slonac will also arrive just as the top 100 and 200 backstroker on the team, Desmon Sachtjen, departs. Minnesota has a deeper 100 back roster, so Slonac might make more of an impact focusing on the 200 back.

In the 200 IM, Slonac will train with the top swimmer on the team in the 2022-23 season, rising senior Kaiser Neverman, as well as 2nd-best swimmer in the event, rising junior Chris Morris

Notably, even though Wisconsin and Minnesota are major rivals, there have been a surprising number of cross-border commits. In addition to Slonac, there are four Wisconsin commits for Minnesota from the men’s and women’s 2023 recruits. But for Wisconsin, there is only one recruit for both the men’s and women’s 2023 team from the state of Minnesota. Minnesota superstar for the past few years, Max McHugh, is from Wisconsin.

Slonac joins IMer Omar Sherif, breaststroker Max Scheurer, multi-stroker Tyler Hansen, IMer/backstroker Smith Connor, multi-stroker Ian Steffen, and freestyler Grant Wodny in the class of 2027.
