Backstroker Cameron Gring Gives Commitment to James Madison University

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Cameron Gring has given her verbal commitment for the 2020 recruiting class to James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Keystone State junior is a backstroke specialist, yet shows the skills across all the strokes and IM events to bring tremendous versatility to the Dukes swimming program and coach Dane Pedersen. Gring is currently completing her junior year at Muhlenberg High School (PA) and swims club for the Reading YMCA of the Mid-Atlantic LSC.

“Proud to announce that I am verbally committing to James Madison University to continue my academic and athletic career. I want to thank my family, friends, coaches and most importantly my cats 🙂 for always helping me through all of the school work and swim practices. I couldn’t have done this without you guys.” #DukeDogPride #roll dukes

In March, Gring won her second-consecutive Pennsylvania High School 3A (small schools) 100 backstroke state title. She just missed her lifetime best in the event despite battling a bad cold that had impacted her training for much of the season. She has earned Winter Junior National cuts in the 100 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 200 IM events and a US Open cut in the 100 backstroke. In 2018, though, her backstroke events saw her most recent improvements across the board earning best times in both the 100- and 200 backstroke during the short-course season. She earned a Summer Juniors cut in the 100-meter backstroke (1:04.08) in 2016.

Best Times (SCY):

  • 50 Freestyle: 23.96 (Futures)
  • 100 Freestyle: 52.22
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:53.50
  • 100 Backstroke: 54.28 (US Open)
  • 200 Backstroke: 1:58.17 (Winter Juniors)
  • 100 Breaststroke: 1:04.51 (Futures)
  • 100 Butterfly: 55.97 (Winter Juniors)
  • 200 IM: 2:02.09 (Winter Juniors)

Inside the CAA, Gring projects to be an instant major point-scorer for James Madison. In both the 100- and 200 backstroke events at conference this past season, she would have finished 2nd place overall and the top Dukes swimmer in the events. She is currently only .34 seconds off an NCAA B cut to qualify for the Division I national championship with another year to polish her development before arriving to campus. She will join Paige Assaid (who will be a senior in 2020) to give the Dukes the strongest backstroke duo in the CAA and a prolific scoring threat at conference.
