Jorie Caneta of Roadrunner Aquatics in Bakersfield, California has verbally committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils.
If the Arizona State women’s swimming program is known for anything, it’s for female breaststrokers. The three individual NCAA titles in program history all belonged to a breaststroker (Beata Kaszuba in the mid-90’s), and their most recent success at the college level has been from Rebecca Edjervik, who is the Swedish National Record holder in the 50 SCM breaststroke.
Caneta could be next in that tradition with yards bests of 1:02.37 and 2:18.70. She also flat-start a 29.2 in the 50 at March’s NCSA Junior Nationals – a meet at which she didn’t appear to be anywhere near a taper.
Her junior season was a monster breakout year for her. She dropped two-and-a-half seconds in the 100, and nearly four in her 200.
After this season, the Sun Devils will lose the services of Romanian senior Alex Popa, who should be in the top 8 at the Pac 12 Championships this season. That will leave a bit of a vacuum, and it should be Caneta and then-senior Tory Houston to fight for the spots on the medley relay.
