Women’s Recap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – – In its next-to-last team tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Ball State women’s swimming program picked up 10 event wins in a dominating 157-99 victory at Bellarmine Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals (3-3) won the meet’s first four events at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, starting with a dominating swim of 3:55.63 in the 400 medley relay by junior Shelby Crist, senior Alex Bader, freshman Hannah Jones and freshman Gracey Payne.

It was the first to two event wins for Payne, who would also take home top billing in the 100 freestyle in 53.56.

Another two-event winner for the Cardinals was sophomore Mary Kate Phillips who take first in the meet’s two longest individual events; the 1000 freestyle (10:42.71) and the 500 freestyle (5:15.61).

Sophomore Marcella Ribeiro collected her team-leading ninth individual victory of the season in the 200 freestyle (1:54.74), topping second-place by over three seconds.

Junior Apsara Sakbun followed with her sixth individual victory of the season, touching the wall in 57.19 in the 100 backstroke.

Also picking up individual event wins for Ball State were junior Sydney Dygert in the 200 butterfly (2:09.07), junior Gracie Saulman in the 50 freestyle (24.77), sophomore Laura Wright in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.83), and freshman Abby Hartshorne in the 100 butterfly (58.10).

It will be a quick turnaround for the Ball State women’s swimming & diving program, which returns to action Saturday morning at 11 a.m. inside the Lewellen Aquatic Center to take on Buffalo in its regular season finale.

The meet will serve as Senior Day for the Cardinals who will honor Alex BaderMeri GrayKayce IngramAbbie McCarterAlexa McDonaldCecilia Moore, and Katie Walker prior to the start of competition.

Men’s Recap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – – The Ball State men’s swimming program did not miss a beat in its first competition in over two months, tallying eight event wins on the way to a 162-100 victory at Bellarmine Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals (2-1) won four of the meet’s first five events at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, starting with a dominating swim of 3:30.37 in the 400 medley relay by freshman Ethan Pheifer, sophomore Joey Garberick, junior Bryce Handshoe, and junior Owen Chaye.

It was the first of a team-leading four event wins for Garberick, who would go on to sweep the breaststrokes with a time of 57.97 in the 100 and 2:07.98 in the 200.

Garberick would also combine with Chaye, junior Jack Wolfred and senior Duncan McLarty for a winning time of 1:25.15 in the 200 freestyle relay.

In addition to factoring in both relay wins, Chaye would take home top honors in the 50 freestyle (21.65) to finish the day with three top finishes.

Three other Cardinals would add individual wins to go with their relay victories to finish the meet with a pair of first-place efforts. Pheifer was the first, clocking in at 52.91 in the 100 backstroke.

Handshoe followed with BSU’s final individual victory, clocking in at 50.96 in the 100 butterfly. The final two-event winner was Wolfred who took first in the 100 freestyle at 47.69, before combining for the win in the 200 freestyle relay to cap the meet.

Rounding out Ball State’s event winners was junior Landyn Riester who touched the wall in 1:44.22 in the 200 freestyle to top teammate senior Ryan Short by 0.01 of a second in the closest race of the day.

The Ball State men’s swimming & diving team returns to action Sunday at the Butler Invitational. Action is scheduled to begin at Noon at the pool in Fishers High School.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine men’s and women’s swimming fell to Ball State on Friday in both of their final regular season duals.

The women’s team (3-6) lost 157-99 while the men’s team (2-4) dropped its dual by a final score of 162-100.

The men captured five first place finishes, led by Brandon Thomas and Matthew Sims with two each.  Thomas raced to first in the 1000 freestyle (9:52.92) and 400 IM (4:10.44), while M. Sims was no. 1 in the 200 butterfly (1:53.53) and 500 freestyle (4:46.86).  Keegan Henderson was victorious in the 200 backstroke (1:57.65) as the other first place finisher.  Daniel Sims captured second place three times – 100 breaststroke (59.44), 200 breaststroke (2:09.19), and 400 IM (4:13.68). JP Metzner also nabbed second in the 100 butterfly (52.45).

The women were winners with the 200 freestyle relay of Rachel Walker, Liz Stevenson, Grace Lough, and Lexi Pierce (1:40.63).  Individually, there were three Knights who earned first place.  Liz Schrenger won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.93), Kayla Effinger finished first in the 200 backstroke (1:43.58), and Johnisse Garcia won the 400 IM (4:44.15).  Second place finishers were Anna Holt in the 200 butterfly (2:09.40) and 500 freestyle (5:23.13), Walker in the 100 freestyle (54.35), Lexi Pierce in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.71), and Avery Witcher in the 400 IM (4:53.88).  Garcia, Witcher, and Caroline McMillin who earned third place, lined up the top three in the 400 IM.

Both teams wrapped up their regular seasons with Friday’s meet. Following this weekend, the men and women are off until the CCSA Chamionships in Lynchburg, Va. Feb. 16-19.
