Ball State Women, IUPUI Men Earn Big Wins In Split Dual

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – – The Ball State women’s swimming & diving team turned in another strong performance, claiming 11 event wins on its way to a 189.5-109.5 victory over IUPUI Friday afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Four different swimmers claimed two individual wins apiece for the Cardinals (2-2; 0-2 MAC), who also swept the relays and earned its first diving victory of the season.

Ball State once again turned in a dominating effort in the freestyle, winning four of the five individual events. Sophomore Gracey Payne took home top honors in the two short sprints, touching the wall in 23.92 in the 50 and 52.05 in the 100.

Junior Marcella Ribeiro followed in the next two distances, trying for the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:51.42) and claiming the solo win in the 500 (4:59.33).

Senior Laura Wright added an event sweep of her own, winning both the 100 (1:05.56) and 200 (2:20.22) breaststrokes.

Rounding out Ball State’s individual two event winners was sophomore Hannah Jones who clocked in a 56.46 in the 100 butterfly and 56.72 in the 100 backstroke.

Freshman Maddy Hischer was the final individual winner, giving BSU its first diving event win of the season with a score of 260.03 on the 3M board.

In addition to their individual wins, Jones and Wright joined sophomore Lilia Newkirk and senior Apsara Sakbun on the first-place 400 medley relay (3:50.36) to open the meet.

Ribeiro and Payne would swim the final two legs of the first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:30.46) to close the meet, and they were joined by the Sakbun sisters, with Haley Sakbun swimming leadoff.

The Ball State women’s swimming & diving program will focus on training over the next few weeks, before closing the first portion of the 2022-23 season at the Miami Invitational, which will be held Dec. 1-3.

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI swim and dive team split with in state foe Ball State on Friday afternoon with the men’s team defeating the Cardinals 190 to 110 while the women fell 189.5 to 109.5. Freshman diver Sebastian Otero set a new IUPUI record in the men’s 1-meter, breaking his previous record set in October. Logan Kelly also stayed undefeated in the 100 and 200 breast. Emmaleigh Zietlow sealed a win in the 1000 free and a tie for first in the 200 free.

On the boards for the Jags, Otero earned wins in the men’s 3-meter (345.30) and 1-meter with a new IUPUI record of 366.60. For the women, Sadie Smith collected a win in the 1-meter (256.95) and came in third in the 3-meter (257.93).

In the pool for the men’s team, sophomore Kelly stayed undefeated in the 100 and 200 breast winning the 100 breast with a time of 54.86 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:02.38. Luke Dibley recorded three wins in the 1000 free (9:50.00), 500 free (4:44.75) and 400 IM (4:07.27). Other top times include Isaac Wilson win the 200 free (1:43.35) and Spencer Jyawook in the 100 fly (48.55)

The Jags went 1, 2, 3 in the 100 back with Grayson Tidwell (51.20) finishing first and Ben Kimmel (51.29) and Dan Charleston (51.60) coming in behind him. The same three finished 1,2,3 in the 200 back with a different order of finish with Charleston coming out on top (1:50.85) followed by Kimmel (1:53.01) and Tidwell (1:54.80).

The women’s team fell to the Cardinals. Top swims came from Zietlow in the 1000 free (10:25.12) and the 200 free (1:51.42), Gabby Puryear-Lynch in the 200 fly (2:06.55) and Emma Theobald in the 200 back (2:04.37) and 400 IM (4:36.24).

The Jags will next host multiple teams next week, Thursday, Nov. 17 through Saturday, Nov. 19 for the House of Champio
