Ball State Women, Purdue Men Claim 1st At Indiana Intercollegiate Meet

The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2017-18 regular season Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet. The Cardinals placed atop five other schools.

“I am very proud of our athletes for earning the win today,” said head coach Kristy Patterson. “We were able to see some depth in our squad by taking 1-2-3 in multiple events. The progress and time drops were nice to see from our Red-White meet. We need to keep training hard to prepare for Ohio next week in our home pool.”

Ball State earned first place in the 200 medley relay with a squad made up of Audrey SchankAmanda KedzierskiAndrea Richter and Anne Vormohr at 1:46.47.

Rachel Bertram also earned a first place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 261.10, earning the team 20 points. Bertram was atop the leader board in the 3-meter dive as well with a score of 276.50. Caitlin Locante had a good performance in her first regular season collegiate meet. Locante placed seventh in the 1-meter (172.15) and third in the 3-meter (218.65).

In the 200 freestyle, Ball State earned second and third place. Liz Madison touched the wall at 1:58.97, earning her team 17 points. Right behind her was Kayla Molnarwith a time of 1:59.21. Cassidy BlackwinLauren Elston,Audrey Mayer, and Morgan Brebberman were the other Cardinals who finished in the top 16 in that event.

The Cardinals went 1-2-3 in the 50 freestyle. Peighton Gilbert finished first with a final time of 24.55. Kedzierski touched the wall next at 24.71, earning 17 points. Vormohr was third in the event at 24.73.

Ball State had five place in the top 16 in the 200 yard IM.Sophie Bader finished first with a time of 2:12.32 whileMaryn Meldrum marked a time of 2:16.42. Traci Muszalski and Cailin Merck finished sixth and seventh respectively. Mason Dahman finished 10 with a time of 2:20.22, earning the Cardinals seven points.

Ball State went 1-2-3 again in the 500 freestyle. Kayla Molnar touched the wall first at 5:16.34. Liz Madison was the next to finish with a time of 5:18.98, earning 17 points. Cassidy Blackwin came in third with a time of 5:20.51.

Other top finishes on the day were Andrea Richter in the 100 butterfly (57.42), Maryn Meldrum in the 100 butterfly (58.38), Sophie Bader in the 100 butterfly (58.47),Peighton Gilbert in the 100 freestyle (54.74), Amanda Kedzierski in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.53) and Audrey Schank  in the 100 backstroke (57.81).

The Cardinals rounded out the day with a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Elston, Bader, Madison and Gilbert came together for a final time of 1:38.96.

The Ball State women’s swimming and diving squad will suit up again on Saturday, Oct. 28 at noon. The Cardinals will take on the Ohio Bobcats at Lewellen Aquatic Center.

Purdue won all 10 men’s swimming events to coast to victory in the team scoring at the annual Indiana Intercollegiates meet, which featured a nine-university field this year.

Senior Adam Noens led the way for the Boilermakers by sweeping the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Erik Juliusson won the 200 individual medley, finished as the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and contributed to the victorious 200 free relay. Eddy Zawatski won the 50 free and swam the leadoff leg on the victorious 200 free relay.

Keith Gill (100 free), Nick McDowell (500 free), Chris Bals (100 breast) and Trent Pellini (100 fly) also won individual events for Purdue.

The Boilermakers finished first of the seven men’s teams with 838 points. Ball State (624 points) was first among the seven women’s programs. The Purdue women and divers did not compete. The Indiana Wesleyan women competed in their first intercollegiate athletics meet Saturday, finishing fifth.

Nathan Barsanti (50 free) and Marat Amaltdinov (100 fly) won their heats and also contributed to the Boilermakers’ victorious 200 medley relay. Joe YoungGrant LewisTim Barth and James Boone also contributed to a relay winner.

Kaleb Gould finished as the runner-up to Noens in the 100 back and won his heat of the 50 free, finishing third overall. Freshman Batuhan Hakan was the runner-up in both the 200 and 500 freestyle.

Purdue continues its fall semester homestand Friday with a co-ed dual vs. Notre Dame. Action begins at 5 p.m. ET.
