The 2019 Western Australia State Open & Age Championships continued today at HBF Stadium. Ashton Brinkworth doubled up on sprint victories for the men’s open categories, reaping gold in the 50m in a time of 22.30, while also topping the podium in the 100m free in 49.48.

Brinkworth’s 100m free time represents the 19-year-old’s personal best in the SCM version of the event, overtaking his previous PB of 49.79 from last year. His 50m free outing today checks-in as the 2nd fastest time of his career.

31-year-old Rockingham star Holly Barratt already earned 2 golds on night 1, taking the women’s 50m fly and 100m IM, but she added a 3rd individual gold by way of her 100m free victory on day 2. Splitting 26.34/27.95, Barratt busted out a winning effort of 54.29 to clear the field by almost 2 seconds. Blair Evans took runner-up in 56.19.

Barratt’s outing today sits among the top 10 performances of her short course career, one which holds a lifetime 100m free mark of 53.36 from 2018.

Additional winners on day 2 included Lee Sang Hoon of Korea topping the podium in the men’s 100m breast in 1:01.13, while Talara-Jade Dixon did the same in the women’s race in 1:07.47.

The men’s 200m fly saw Kieren Pollard take gold in 2:00.02, while Korea’s Song Im Gyu beat the men’s 100m back field in a time of 53.26.

Of note, the boys’ 18-19-year-old category of the 50m freestyle saw Kalani Ireland get to the wall first in 22.25, a time that would have taken the open category as well. Ireland had only been under the 23-second barrier one other time prior to tonight, carrying a previous PB of 22.58 into this meet. With his win, Ireland hacked .33 off of that career-fastest mark.
